UM Extended Education student loan policy
If you plan to apply for financial assistance through Manitoba Student Aid, or a similar program in your province of residence, you must first apply to the UM Extended Education certificate program of your choice and be granted at least provisional admission.
Extended Education’s policy states that all tuition fees must be paid upon registration. The MB Student Aid form will be provided for students based on their paid registration. The course load, course start and end dates as well as the course fees per term will be calculated and entered on the Student Aid form as per existing registration.
Please be aware that all Extended Education certificate programs are considered part-time and the course load cannot surpass 59% for the purposes of Manitoba Student Aid.
How your UM Extended Education course load is calculated
A full course load at the University of Manitoba is 15 credit hours per term, which is equivalent to five 3-credit-hour courses. Because Extended Education courses are measured using contact hours rather than credit hours, contact hours must be converted to credit hours before calculating your course load.
Converting Extended Education contact hours to credit hours
Twelve contact hours are equal to one credit hour.
How Extended Education’s contact hours covert to credit hours:
- 12 contact hours = 1.0 credit hour
- 18 contact hours = 1.5 credit hours
- 24 contact hours = 2.0 credit hours
- 30 contact hours = 2.5 credit hours
- 36 contact hours = 3.0 credit hours
Calculating your Extended Education course load
To determine your course load percentage, use this formula:
(Total credit hours registered in term ÷ 15) x 100
Example 1
You are registered for one 36-contact-hour course (3 credit hours) plus one 18-contact-hour course (1.5 credit hours) for a total of 4.5 credit hours.
- (4.5 credit hours ÷ 15) x 100 = 30% course load
Example 2
You are registered in one 36-contact-hour course (3 credit hours).
- (3 credit hours ÷ 15) x 100 = 20% course load
After you register for your Extended Education courses
Email Extended Education’s Registration System Officer at extended@umanitoba.ca with your student number in the subject line.
Extended Education will complete Part D of the Manitoba Student Aid form and return it to you. You will be responsible for completing your portion of the form and submitting it directly to the Manitoba Student Aid office. Please note that a new form may be required for each term of study. A similar process applies to student aid programs in other provinces.
If approved, any loans or grants will be issued directly to the student.
Please note that funding decisions are made solely by the applicable provincial Student Aid office. The University of Manitoba is not involved in the approval process and is not notified of funding decisions.
