Human Resource Legislation (HRM 0110)

Provincial and some federal legislation regulating human resource management will be discussed. The course covers matters arising out of the Labour Relations Act, the Human Rights Code, the Employment Standards Act and related legislation, the Canadian Constitution, the Worker’s Compensation Act, the Pay Equity Act and other related labour and human resource legislation.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • identify various human resource or management issues in the workplace, as well the statutes that impact them
  • utilize basic statutory interpretation principles in order to interpret and apply statutory provisions to these issues
  • identify and interpret key sources of information related to legislation, regulations, and interpretative aids in order to apply basic statutory interpretation
  • demonstrate how the law may be applied in various jurisdictions in which an organization operates
  • create employment contracts that conform to workplace legal requirements and best practices
  • recommend workplace policies that comply with legislation and best practices
  • understand legal processes and legislative powers to prescribe legal remedies
