Federal tax law update
The federal government has introduced changes to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) affecting tax benefits involved in donating qualifying securities to registered charitable organizations in Canada. As of January 1, 2024, any capital gain on these donated securities will no longer be tax-free. Instead, 30 percent of the capital gain at the time of the securities being sold and transferred to a charity will now be taxable.
If you were considering donating to UM through your securities portfolio, we suggest doing so before the December 31, 2023 deadline to make the most of the current tax incentives. If you wish to discuss further or require further information, please don’t hesitate to contact Stephanie Levene.
