Extended Education is an academic unit of the University of Manitoba that offers continuing education and professional development programming for upskilling and reskilling to lifelong learners. Through its Access Program, Extended Education also provides programming to support degree-seeking students who have experienced barriers to equal access, opportunities, and resources. In addition, Extended Education provides supports to students taking University of Manitoba degree credit courses through General Studies. Extended Education works in partnership with industry, government, University of Manitoba faculties and departments, as well as community organizations and communities, to develop high quality programming that is equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible.

Extended Education is a member of the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE), a professional association of Canadian university continuing education deans, directors, and senior administrative personnel.

Programs

Extended Education offers a diverse selection of courses, short-cycled learning, and certificates for professional and personal development in business, finance, and management; process and technology management; public sector and municipal administration; adult education design and instruction; higher education administration and leadership; and applied social sciences. Programs are usually completed on a part-time basis and offered in a variety of modalities including in-person, online or hybrid. Completion of a program may result in a credential of Certificate, Micro-certificate, or in a Letter of Accomplishment or Letter of Participation. Extended Education also offers a full-time intensive programming package (“Intensive Programs”) which results in the completion of a Certificate and/or a Letter of Accomplishment.

Extended Education follows the University of Manitoba Certificate and Diploma Framework for its programming. Extended Education operates on a tri-semester system, comprising three standard academic terms: Fall, Winter, and Summer.

Open Enrolment Courses

Open Enrolment courses can be taken independently without registering in an Extended Education program. The completion of courses does not result in a credential. Upon successful completion of Open Enrolment courses, individuals can apply them to an Extended Education program in accordance with the program requirements.

Access

The Access Program works with students across multiple disciplines including students enrolled in University 1 and students pursuing a degree in the arts, sciences, health sciences, social work, law, and education. Access Program students should refer to the University of Manitoba General Academic Regulations, as well as the academic regulations associated with University 1 or the faculty offering their degree program of study.

General Studies

General Studies provides opportunities for students to take credit courses at the University of Manitoba without being enrolled in a degree program. These students include professionals developing their careers, students satisfying entrance requirements to professional and other faculties, seniors enriching their lives, students visiting from other institutions, and individuals exploring a career change. Courses are available in the Fall, Winter and Summer terms and are offered on campus, online or hybrid. General Studies Student Advisors are available to assist students with course and program planning and to provide admission and registration information throughout the year.
