Crisis Counselling (COUN 0250)

Counsellors are often confronted with having to help individuals deal with various life crises. This course shows how to integrate new material into existing counselling styles. Areas covered include determining what is a crisis, assessing an individual in crisis, establishing client safety, assessing suicide lethality, negotiating social service involvement and helping the client build their support network.

Prerequisite: Counselling Skills - Level I

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • discuss and outline the basis of contemporary crisis therapy
  • identify, assess and intervene with individuals who may be in crisis
  • demonstrate and practice key crisis therapy skills
  • identify and review with clients the social services available for individuals in crisis
  • assess and adapt crisis therapy practices to fit in with his or her own system’s needs
