Caring for the Caregiver (COUN 0254)

The concept of self-care encompasses a wide range of aspects that play an important role in staying healthy and thus enabling professionals to function at their optimum. This course is designed for a variety of helping professionals who share common challenges in managing self-care. Through the use of discussion, group activities, and self-awareness exercises, students will explore the various factors that influence self-care, develop insight into their own self-care behaviour (both strengths and limitations), and construct some personalized self-care strategies.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • recognize his or her own defense patterns used in communication
  • identify self-care strategies, and teach and mentor others to apply these strategies
  • recognize and characterize secondary trauma and its impact on the caregiver
  • apply effective strategies for finding support in his or her own life as a caregiver
  • coach and mentor caregivers on accessing appropriate supports
