Mental Health Issues and Co-Occurring Addictions in Human Services Delivery (COUN 0256)

Students will discuss the definitions of "mental health, mental illness and addictions". Varying biological, psychological and social models of causation and treatment will be explored. Other issues that will be covered include: crisis management, community resources and the role of allied disciplines, stigmatization, suicide, medications and a review of the mental health act.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • gain a greater awareness of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
  • gather essential knowledge and practical skills related to supporting people with co-occurring disorders
  • enhance competencies related to the identification of signs and symptoms experienced by people living with mental health and substance use disorders
  • acquire knowledge on multi-disciplinary service provision and how to assist people navigating complex service delivery
