Labour Relations (HRM 0202)

This course presents the theory and practice of labour relations in Canada; specifically, this course examines the employee relations framework within Canada including its legal, political, social, economic and ecological subsystems. Key topics include industrial relations, union-management relations, collective bargaining and labour economics. Special attention will be given to the strategies that managers can utilize in order to work effectively and fairly with employers and deal with difficult situations in both unionized and non-unionized environments. Throughout the course, students will explore and gain a better understanding of how key players act and interact.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • interpret and use appropriately key term expressions pertaining to labour relations
  • outline the history of the Canadian labour relations environment and the systems that enable it to function today
  • apply the laws pertaining to labour relations and the workplace in general
  • describe the process of how an organization may become unionized
  • demonstrate an understanding of third party dispute resolutions, including the various roles of parties in reaching a solution
  • identify and apply effective management strategies that work within the bounds of a collective agreement, including the principles of progressive discipline
  • explain the union-management relationship and describe the process of how it may become harmonious
