Basic assumptions and applications of several theories of counselling are covered including Adlerian, Person-Centered, Feminist, Gestalt and Cognitive. Consideration is given to fundamental issues in counselling, particularly the integration of theories with counselling practice.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • identify and discuss the key characteristics of various counselling approaches and theories
  • compare and contrast counselling theories through discussion, case illustration and application of theoretical approaches to counselling situations and populations
  • develop a continued self-awareness, identity and personal style in counselling
  • examine and articulate his or her own personal beliefs and values around the counselling process
  • use personal reflection and assessment to create a frame of reference in order to develop his or her own philosophy and personal style of counselling
  • examine ethical issues relevant to counselling practice
