Dr. Lorena Sekwan Fontaine [LLB/00, PhD/18] 

On being recognized as the 2026 recipient of the UM Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic Innovation. 

Dr. Fontaine is a professor and current department head of the Department of Indigenous Studies in the Faculty of Arts.

The 2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards Celebration of Excellence, presented by TD Insurance, will take place on the evening of Thursday, September 24 as part of Homecoming 2026.

The mix of private and public documents, including petitions, receipts, contracts and letters, are available for the first time in Winnipeg. This summer, the Department of Classics brought together researchers from around the world to transcribe the documents. Now, it is your chance to take a close up view of history.
