Program details

The Max Rady College of Medicine in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences offers a two-year Surgery (MSc) as an additional certification to current surgery residents.

Expected duration:

  • MD degree; currently enrolled in a postgraduate residency program in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

SURG 7012 Surgery: Major course in Surgical Problems

A series of short-course modules offered by surgeon-researchers covering the diverse aspects of knowledge translation in surgical research and practice. A compulsory course for MSc students in the Department of Surgery. Prerequisite: Students outside of Surgery require Graduate Chair permission.

SURG 7022 Surgery: Specialty Rounds in Surgical Problems (Part A & Part B) 3 Cr. Hrs.

Under the mentorship of the student's advisor, independent study on the practice, theory and critical reflection methods of surgical research by attending relevant specialty rounds and journal clubs, directed reading and reflective writings. Permission from Graduate Chair.

SURG 7030 Advanced Surgery

Designed to expose students to specific surgery issues that are relevant to their thesis research at Department of Surgery Subspecialty Rounds; demonstrating an understanding of knowledge development and exchange, critical appraisal, practice-based evidence and their connections to translational activities. Permission from Graduate Chair.

SURG 7040 Surgical Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Prepare students to design studies suitable for a wide variety of research questions including diagnostic, etiologic and prognostic, and treatment outcomes, with focus on surgical issues. It should also provide students with the essential biostatistical and epidemiologic tools to critique medical literature. The evaluation is based on submission of a complete proposal to answer a research question of each student's choice.

Admission requirements

  • The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the Surgery (MSc) Medical Graduate program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

    In addition to the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies found in the Graduate Studies Regulations Section of the Academic Calendar, this program is only open to holders of an MD degree who are currently enrolled in a postgraduate residency program in the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. As residents incorporate this program as part of their residency training, concurrent curriculum registration is required.

    In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

How to apply

The name of your preferred supervisor is required at the time of application.

Approval process

Residents from UM's Department of Surgery who are interested in pursuing a Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program during their training may request a short-term extension of training to accommodate their pursuit.

Tuition and related educational expenses for the master's program is the responsibility of the resident and will not be reimbursed by PGME.

Trainees enrolled in residency programs that have academic enrichment opportunities incorporated in the competencies of the residency program curriculum are not eligible to apply for the extension of training related to the Master of Science in Surgery.

These programs include the following:

  • Cardiac surgery
  • Neurosurgery

Individuals interested must follow the process as outlined below.


Expression of interest

The resident must draft an expression of interest document, outlining the
following;

  • The specific Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program research project they are interested in pursuing
  • The specific starting and ending dates of the research project
  • The reason(s) for pursuing the additional education

The expression of interested document must be presented to, supported and signed by the residency program director.


Application and approval of Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program

  • The resident must complete the Application Guide and Supplemental Form.
  • The resident must arrange a meeting through the Department of Surgery Research and Graduate Office with the graduate chair to review the applicant’s research proposal and the accompanying documentation for approval before admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies can be approved.

PGME approval for extension of training

  • In order to obtain an extension of training for the resident who has been admitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies to pursue the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program, the residency program director must submit an application for extension with supporting documentation to the associate dean, PGME no later than November 15 of the academic year prior to the start of the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program.
  • Upon review of the application for extension of training, the associate dean, PGME may call a meeting to discuss the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program with the residency program director and the graduate chair, Department of Surgery.
  • The associate dean, PGME will determine if the request is approved, denied or deferred.

Final approval

  • The resident will be granted an extension of training for the duration of the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program (for a maximum of one year).
  • The resident will not advance their PGY level during the time that they are enrolled in the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program. The resident will advance to the next PGY level once they return to their regular activities in the residency program.
  • The resident will continue to be accounted for in one of the Shared Health funded spots while attending the program.

  • Program administrator to submit an eForm B to request an extension of training
  • Trainee to submit a University of Manitoba Concurrent registration form to regpgme@umanitoba.ca once it has been signed off by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Program

Offers of admission will be released to successful applicants on May 20, 2022 from the University of Manitoba Master of Physician Assistant Studies, the same day as the University of Toronto BScPA Program and McMaster University Physician Assistant Education Program. The three institutions are pleased to provide applicants their offers on the same day to help with the decision-making process.

The Pathologist Assistant program only admits Canadian and US students every two years. The next intake is for Fall 2023.
