Program details

The Max Rady College of Medicine in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences offers a two-year Surgery (MSc) as an additional certification to current surgery residents.

Expected duration:

  • 2 years

Degree requirements:

  • MD degree; currently enrolled in a postgraduate residency program in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

Estimated tuition and fees:

  • Program fees are assessed in the first two terms of study, followed by a continuing fee in the third and any subsequent terms.

Courses

SURG 7012 Surgery: Major Course in Surgical Problems

This course consists of short modules taught by surgeon-researchers, focusing on applying surgical research to practice. It is required for MSc students in the Department of Surgery. If you are not in the Surgery department, you need permission from the Graduate Chair to enroll.

SURG 7022 Specialty Rounds in Surgical Problems

This course involves independent study under the guidance of your advisor. You'll engage in activities like attending specialty rounds and journal clubs, reading relevant literature, and writing reflections on surgical research practice and theory. You need permission from the Graduate Chair to take this course.

SURG 7030 Advanced Surgery

In this course, you'll explore specific surgical issues related to your thesis research through Subspecialty Rounds in the Department of Surgery. It covers knowledge development, critical appraisal, practice-based evidence, and how these elements connect to real-world applications. Permission from the Graduate Chair is required.

SURG 7040 Surgical Epidemiology and Biostatistics

This course prepares you to design research studies on various surgical issues, including diagnostic, etiologic, prognostic, and treatment outcomes. You'll learn essential biostatistical and epidemiological tools to evaluate medical literature. Your performance is assessed by submitting a complete research proposal on a topic of your choice.

Admission requirements

  • To be considered for entry into the Surgery (MSc) Medical Graduate Program, you must meet the following minimum requirements. However, meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

    In addition to the admission requirements listed in the Graduate Studies Regulations Section of the Academic Calendar, this program is only available to MD degree holders who are currently enrolled in a postgraduate residency program at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. Since residents will incorporate this program into their residency training, concurrent curriculum registration is required.

    Besides these specific requirements, all applicants must also meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Approval process

Extension of training for the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program

If you are a resident from the University of Manitoba's Department of Surgery and wish to pursue a Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program during your residency, you may request a short-term extension of your training.

Eligibility

If you are in a program with academic enrichment opportunities included in your curriculum, such as Cardiac Surgery or Neurosurgery, you are not eligible for this extension.

Process for requesting an extension

1. Expression of interest

  • Draft a document outlining:
    • The specific research project in the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program.
    • The starting and ending dates of the research project.
    • Your reasons for pursuing additional education.
  • Present this document to and obtain support and signature from your residency program director.

2. Application and approval for the master's program

  • Complete the Application Guide and Supplemental Form.
  • Arrange a meeting with the graduate chair through the Department of Surgery Research and Graduate Office to review your research proposal and documentation. This meeting must occur before your admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies can be approved.

3. PGME approval for extension

  • Submit your application for extension, with supporting documentation, to the associate dean of PGME by November 15 of the academic year before starting the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program.
  • The associate dean may call a meeting with your residency program director and the graduate chair to discuss the program.
  • The associate dean will decide whether to approve, deny, or defer your extension request.

4. Final approval

  • If approved, you will receive a one-year extension of training.
  • You will not advance to the next PGY level while enrolled in the Master’s program. You will advance to the next PGY level upon returning to regular residency activities.
  • You will remain in one of the Shared Health funded spots during the extension.
Processing
  • The program administrator must submit an eForm B to request the extension of training.
  • You should submit a University of Manitoba Concurrent Registration Form, signed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Program, to regpgme@umanitoba.ca.

Responsibility for costs

You are responsible for tuition and related educational expenses for the master's program. PGME will not reimburse these costs.

Offers of admission will be released to successful applicants on May 17, 2024 from the University of Manitoba Master of Physician Assistant Studies, the same day as the University of Toronto BScPA Program and McMaster University Physician Assistant Education Program.
