Extensive clinical exposure

At St. Boniface Hospital, one of Canada’s leading cardiac surgery centers and Manitoba’s sole tertiary referral center for cardiac disease, you’ll gain exposure to a wide variety of cases. Serving a catchment area of over two million people, the hospital performs more than 1,100 adult cardiac bypass surgeries annually. Your training in the 15-bed cardiac surgical intensive care unit (CSICU) will immerse you in high-volume, complex cases, preparing you for the dynamic and rewarding field of cardiac surgery.

Specialized training opportunities

In addition to your core training in adult cardiac surgery, you’ll have the chance to further specialize through a Royal College-approved affiliation with the University of Alberta. Here, you’ll gain experience in cardiac transplantation and pediatric cardiac surgery, expanding your expertise and providing you with a broader scope of practice for your future career.

Our program emphasizes not only clinical excellence but also academic growth. With ample research opportunities, you’ll be encouraged to contribute to the advancement of cardiac surgery. Whether you’re interested in clinical trials, innovative surgical techniques, or improving patient outcomes, our program provides the resources and support to help you make a meaningful impact on the field.
