At the Health Sciences Centre and Winnipeg Children’s Hospital, you will have access to state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, including:
- 1.5T and 3T MR imaging (with an intraoperative MRI suite, known as IMRIS)
- High-resolution CT scanning
- Angiographic capabilities
Additionally, our center is home to Canada’s first Gamma Knife Unit, a pioneering technology that treats conditions such as metastatic tumors and vascular malformations while fostering clinical research.
Comprehensive training in neurosurgery
As a resident, you will immerse yourself in a broad spectrum of neurosurgical subspecialties. Your training will encompass:
- Epilepsy
- Neuro-oncology
- Vascular neurosurgery
- Spinal neurosurgery
- Pediatric neurosurgery
- Trauma neurosurgery
- Functional neurosurgery
In addition to clinical neurosurgery, you'll rotate through critical areas such as neurology, neuroradiology, and neuropathology, providing you with a well-rounded educational experience.

Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre serves as the only referral center for 1.2 million residents in Manitoba. Our comprehensive facilities, including the General Hospital and Children's Hospital, have developed uniform protocols for the treatment and long-term follow-up of various neurosurgical disorders. As a resident, you will play a vital role in delivering exceptional care to our diverse patient population.
