First year students
Your first year of university is about settling into school, making good choices and developing good habits. Here is a summary of what to accomplish before the term starts and the resources available to you after school is underway.
After you accept your offer of admission
See the New student checklist on the UManitoba app for a complete list of the things you need to do before September classes begin. We have highlighted some of your key tasks here.
Claim your UMnetID (May - September)
You need your UMnetID to use your UM e-mail, Wi-Fi and all UM online tools. To claim your UMnetID, you will need your student number, which you can find on your acceptance letter from the University.

Take part in orientation events
Getting used to your new university life is a big part of your first year. Get a good start by attending orientation events. You'll meet new people, find your way around campus and discover key resources that will help you throughout the year.
After classes have started
Take advantage of these resources and supports to help you during the school year.
Co-curricular opportunities to help you succeed
There are so many ways to get involved on campus, locally or globally. You can volunteer, join a club, be a mentor (or mentee!), take part in intramurals, develop your leadership skills, and even go on a student exchange to another country. You can participate in activities that are helping others to achieve social, economic and environmental justice. All of these options can help you to gain practical experience and new skills.
