Frequently asked questions
Admission requirements
I have a student who will not be graduating high school, can they apply from grade 11?
Students must meet our admission requirements, including high school graduation/completion of their country’s general admission requirement. If they will not fulfill this requirement, they may consider applying to our pathway program, ICM.
Can I send a student’s documents to be pre-assessed before submitting an application?
We are happy to assist you with general questions about eligibility and admission requirements, but cannot pre-assess a student’s documents, nor can we guarantee admission, before they submit an application.
My student has over a year of post-secondary studies, can they still go into University 1?
No, students with 24 credit hours or more of post-secondary studies are not eligible for University 1. Students with 24 credit hours or more can apply as an advanced entry applicant.
Do applicants from every country have to provide English proficiency? Do GCE and other international curriculums meet your English proficiency requirement?
We may assess students for an English proficiency waiver for a variety of international curriculums and countries. Students will need to provide supporting documents to show that they meet the waiver conditions.
My student did not complete Grade 12 Math, are they eligible to apply?
Our direct entry (DE) programs (with the exception of Fine Arts) require a senior level mathematics course for admission. Students may consider completing a pathway program through the International College of Manitoba (ICM) or complete senior level mathematics course through a virtual high school.
Applying
When are your applications posted?
Fall (September) and summer (May) term direct entry applications are typically posted in early October, and advanced entry/transfer and ELC applications are posted in early November. Winter (January) term applications are typically posted in early May.
The student wants me to complete and submit their application for them—is this alright?
It is great that you are willing to help through this important process! If the student would like your assistance, please be sure to go through the application with them to ensure that all information is correct before it is submitted. It is mandatory that the student’s email address is used as the primary email address on the application.
The student wants me to communicate on their behalf and/or stay involved with the application throughout the entire process. How can we do this if my email address cannot be entered?
If the student wants you to be a contact for their application, they must complete the “release of information” section of the online application by including your email address and the education consultancy.
The student didn’t fill out the release of information section of the application. Can it be done after the application is submitted?
If the release was not completed in the application, an Information Release Form can be scanned and emailed to us after the fact. This should only be done in instances where you are helping students who already have an active application but did not fill out the release section of the online application. Please complete the following steps:
- Login to the application portal here.
- Click on the 'Update Application Details' tab and locate the 'Release of Information' header under this tab.
- Click on the 'Update Release of Information' hyperlink to download the Release of Information form.
- Complete the Release of Information form, indicating the third party (or parties) to be granted consent for the University of Manitoba to share any personal information related to student's application with.
- Upload the completed Release of Information form in the application portal.
Does the student have to list all previous post-secondary studies? What if they want to start fresh?
All previous studies must be fully and accurately listed in the application. Failure to disclose may result in serious consequences such as denial of transfer of credit (if applicable) or acceptance, registration being withdrawn, or academic suspension.
What should I do if my student has been away from school for more than 1 year?
A confirmation of a gap year may be requested if records indicate a gap in education. If this is the case, the application portal will be updated with that requirement and the Gap in Academic Studies Statement can be filled out directly within the application portal.
- Login to the application portal here.
- Click on the 'Application Status' header and select the 'Required Documentation' tab on the left.
- Under 'Additional Supporting Documents', locate [ X Gap in Academic Studies Statement].
- Select 'Click here to update'.
- Select Yes/No to the 2 questions and click submit.
Note that we cannot make an admission decision until this statement has been completed.
What can I do to ensure the application is processed as expediently as possible?
To assist us with processing the application as quickly as possible, please ensure that the application is completed fully and accurately, the application has been submitted and fee paid by the deadline, any required documents have been uploaded and submitted, and documents are translated (if required). Additionally, processing times are slower during peak times (close to application deadlines and registration period), so it is best for applications to be submitted as early as possible.
Application status
I want to know an applicant’s status—how do I find this out?
Please be advised that we do not provide application status updates by email. If you have been given consent to be involved with the application, please have the applicant log into their Application Portal and share with you any recent updates and changes to their application status.
Once an admission decision has been made on the application, the applicant will receive an email notifying them. Decisions can be viewed in the Application Portal.
Did you receive the documents needed for the application?
If there are any outstanding documents needed to complete the application, they will be listed in the Application Portal. Please allow 10-15 business days from the date of arrival of the documents for them to be updated in the Application Portal. Uploaded documents will need to be reviewed before being marked as “received”.
Study permits and custodianship
Can a UM representative assist with the Study Permit process?
No, university representatives cannot advise on the study permit process. Review Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website to learn more about the study permit requirements. The International Centre has also compiled some useful links and information on their website.
An applicant under the age of 17 requires a Custodian/Guardian—can the University of Manitoba help with this?
The University of Manitoba does not provide custodian services for students. A student under the age of 17 is advised to find a custodian upon application to the university. UM does not provide a list of registered or preferred custodianship providers and will not advise applicants on this matter. Please refer to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website for detailed information regarding custodianship requirements.
Tuition and fee payment
When is the tuition deposit deadline?
Students requiring a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for study permit applications are required to pay a non-refundable $2000 CAD tuition deposit by credit card. This deposit will need to be paid within 10 business days once a decision has been made on their application.
How do we know exactly how much tuition will cost?
Students will receive an exact fee assessment in their Aurora Student account once they have registered for all courses. For estimates of the cost of books, living and tuition fees, visit our website.
How and when can we pay tuition?
Tuition can be paid by a variety of methods such as Convera for Students and PayMyTuition. Tuition fee payments are due near the beginning of each term. Visit this website for a list of deadlines.
How can I pre-pay tuition in advance?
The University of Manitoba only requires that students’ tuition and fees be paid by the fee-payment deadline. If a student would like to pre-pay their tuition, please follow the instructions on our website.
Scholarships and Awards
Are international students eligible for scholarships?
International students applying to a direct entry program for the fall term may be eligible for entrance scholarships ranging from $1,000—$3,000 CAD, based on their interim secondary school grades.
