Programs we offer

We offer a wide variety of programs, workshops and special teaching events to the university teaching community to enhance teaching and learning experiences.

Graduate Teaching Program (GTP)

The Graduate Teaching Program offers a comprehensive journey for aspiring educators, with modules to provide participants with foundational knowledge, skills, and values crucial for meaningful teaching in higher education.

Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW)

Developed in British Columbia in the late 1970s, the ISW was initially intended for new instructors. Since then, the program has grown extensively and has become a component of many faculty development programs across colleges and universities in Canada, the United States and around the world.

Teaching and Learning Certificate (TLC)

The UM TLC program is designed for faculty and full-time instructors who are in the early part of their teaching career. The program has been specifically designed to accommodate the busy schedule of faculty: limited classroom hours, flexible workshop offerings, supportive mentoring, and individualized teaching feedback.

Pedagogical support for Indigenization, inclusion and experiential learning

Creating safe, inclusive environments for learning benefits both students and instructors. Explore ways to incorporate Indigenous pedagogies, EDI-informed learning, accessible course design and experiential learning into your classroom.

Indigenous pedagogical resources

In distinct Indigenous worldviews, 13 is a sacred number related to the 13 yearly moons and the turtle is a symbol of Truth. With that in mind and with the help of Indigenous Initiatives Educators, we've compiled resources related to 13 topics within Indigenous pedagogical theory to help you incorporate the Truth of Indigenous pedagogies into your classroom.

Syllabus toolkit

Designing a syllabus is a complex task. A syllabus needs to communicate essential course details to students in a friendly and open tone. On this page you’ll find templates in a variety of formats that you can adapt for your needs, and a syllabus creation guide organized by section to correspond with the templates. All documents meet or exceed the requirements for instructors laid out in the Responsibilities of Academic Staff with Regards to Students (ROASS) policy.

Experiential learning

Experiential learning is learning through experience. Students learn through processes such as problem-solving, critical evaluation and action-orientated projects in real-life settings.

Knowledge nuggets

Bite-sized resources to help students help themselves, as a collection of teaching/learning resources for promoting academic integrity and related topics (e.g., citing and referencing, finding valid sources) that has been curated within UM Learn.
These resources include content in various forms and sample learning outcomes, learning activities and quizzes. Instructors can select and import chosen resources into their own course shells and modify them to suit their specific course needs.
