The Rehabilitation Sciences (PhD) requires the completion of coursework and a research-based thesis.
Expected duration: 4 years
Tuition and fees: Tuition fees are charged for terms one and two and terms four and five. A continuing fee is paid for term three, term six and each subsequent term. (Refer to Graduate tuition and fees.)
For students admitted with a thesis-based Master's degree the Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Sciences program requires a total of 12 credit hours of course work, consisting of the completion of four 3 credit hour or half courses, in addition to the completion of a research-based thesis.
Students admitted without a thesis-based Master's degree must complete an additional 6 credit hours of coursework including REHB 7280 Rehabilitation Theory and Research Design and REHB 7290 Appraisal, Synthesis and Communication of Research Evidence in Rehabilitation Sciences which would be completed in the first year of the program.

Admission requirements
Admission to the PhD Rehabilitation Sciences program requires a Master’s degree. Applicants will usually possess a thesis-based Master’s degree in a discipline or profession consistent with Rehabilitation Sciences. Applicants with an entry-to-practice Master’s degree and/or a course-based Master’s degree will be assessed for their research experience on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions Committee.
Students admitted to the program without a thesis-based Master’s degree will usually at minimum be required to complete two additional 3 credit hour courses (REHB 7280 “Rehabilitation Theory and Research Design” and REHB 7290 “Appraisal, Synthesis and Communication of Research Evidence in Rehabilitation Sciences”) in the first year of the program.
In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Advisor
Prior to starting the application process, applicants must contact potential advisors and find a College of Rehabilitation Sciences faculty member whose research interests align with theirs, and is available and willing to act as advisor.
When contacting potential advisors, the applicant should include:
- A description of the student’s background and area of research interest
- A current CV/resume
- Proposed timeframe for studying
- Copies of transcripts
- English language test scores (if applicable)
How to apply
Applications for the Rehabilitation Sciences (PhD) program are accepted for fall entry. Applications must be completed online and include several parts:
- Application fee (non-refundable)
- Unofficial copies of transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation (must be requested from within the application)
- A confirmed advisor within the College of Rehabilitation Sciences prior to application
Supervisor support: Written confirmation from the faculty advisor must be submitted with your application prior to the admission deadline. This letter must address any funding that will be provided to the student. - Proof of English language proficiency, if required
