Program details
The PhD in Kinesiology and Recreation Management equips students with the advanced knowledge and research expertise needed to redefine our understanding of health and well-being through evidence-based study.
Expected duration: 4 years
Tuition and fees: Tuition fees are charged for terms one and two and terms four and five. A continuing fee is paid for term three, term six and each subsequent term. (Refer to Graduate tuition and fees.)
In addition to the minimum course requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies found in the Graduate Studies Regulations Section, students must:
- Complete a minimum of 9 credit hours of graded coursework at the 7000 level or above (including KPER 8000)
- Complete and successfully defend a thesis

Admission requirements
The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
Applicants to the PhD program must possess a research-based Master’s degree in a discipline or profession consistent with the chosen research area. Applicants with comparable degrees may be considered.
Advisor
Applicants must have a confirmed advisor identified at the time of application to be considered for admission. It is the student’s responsibility to find an advisor.
Prior to admission to the Ph.D. program, each applicant will be required to specify their area of research interest, and to have corresponded with an eligible PhD advisor(s) (member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies) who are willing to supervise the student’s PhD program.
The proposed advisor must provide a Letter of Support to be included with the application. The Letter of Support must include the applicant’s suitability to the intended program as well as financial support that will or will not be provided.
In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
How to apply
Applications for the Kinesiology and Recreation Management program are accepted for Fall and Winter entry. Applications must be completed online and include several parts:
- Application fee (non-refundable)
- Unofficial copies of transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation (must be requested from within the application)
- One letter is required from the applicant’s chosen advisor, stating they are willing to advise this applicant during their graduate degree, the applicant’s suitability to the intended program as well as financial support that will or will not be provided.
- One letter must be from an individual who has the ability to assess the applicant on an academic basis. The individuals may include (but are not limited to) the applicant’s professor, advisor, a former committee member, or faculty member.
- Statement of intent, stating desired area of study and research interests
- Writing sample, in English, of at least 250 words (or a scholarly writing piece)
- Proof of English language proficiency, if required
