Q&A from Fall Counsellors' Seminar 2024

Are students who don't go to UM directly after grade 12 still eligible for entrance scholarships?

Yes, provided they do not attend university or college in the time between high school and applying to UM.  For students who apply but do not attend classes in the fall or winter terms for which they originally applied, students will be required to re-apply; if they remain a Direct Entry student at the time of their new application (less than 24 credit hours at university/college), they will be eligible for entrance scholarship consideration again based on their grade 12 courses.

Can domestic students defer admission or scholarship offers?

No. If a student receives an offer but chooses not to attend, they will be required to re-apply and pay a new application fee. If the student remains a Direct Entry applicant at the time of their new application (less than 24 credit hours at university/college), they will be eligible for entrance scholarship consideration again based on their grade 12 courses.

Who do I contact to get more information about InformNet courses and the steps needed to ensure UM receives interim and final marks?

Please contact the Admissions team for more information: admissions@umanitoba.ca

At what stage of application does a student taking AP (Advanced Placement) classes decide if they want those to count for the equivalent university credit?

The student should first check off the "AP courses" box in their application. They can decide whether or not to release their AP grades to Admissions once their grades are available in the summer. For complete details about this process, please see our AP information on the transfer credit page of our website.

For the New Buffalo Education Gathering, is there a grade or age that you are targeting with this initiative?

The New Buffalo Education Gathering is best suited for grade 11 and 12 students. For students outside this age range, please inquire directly with the Indigenous Recruitment team at indigenous_recruitment@umanitoba.ca, provide details on the group of students, and they will be able to provide more information.

Do you automatically reach out to Indigenous students if they self-identify on the application or do they have to reach out to you for supports?

Once an Indigenous student self-identifies on their application, they are automatically added to the Indigenous Student Recruitment mailing list. They are then notified of supports available to them, and can respond to those emails or connect with the Indigenous Recruitment team at indigenous_recruitment@umanitoba.ca to set up a meeting or an in-person tour.

Are all 24 English courses listed in the Academic Course Guide eligible to satisfy the English requirement for University 1 admission?

All the courses listed under 'English' in the Academic Course Guide can satisfy the English requirement for any of our program admissions, including U1. The courses highlighted in blue are eligible for entrance scholarship consideration.

How can an Adult Learning Centre be added to UM's automated admissions system so we get the consolidated applicant list and secure transcript sharing?

Please contact our Admissions team for more information: admissions@umanitoba.ca

If a high school course is not listed in UM’s application when students are applying, how does that get corrected?

If a high school course is not listed in the drop-down menu in the application form, students can free type the course and submit their self-reported grade for that course. Any feedback re. the online application is welcome, please send this to the Admissions team at: admissions@umanitoba.ca

For Nursing, the First Year Planning Guide lists "Math 40S" as a pre-requisite. Can a learner be successful with Essential Math 40S without additional non-credit Math courses?

The “any Math 40S” pre-requisite can be satisfied with any of the various math courses listed in the Academic Course Guide. When in doubt, feel free to contact the program office for the student’s intended program and academic advisors or other staff can provide you with additional information about how best to prepare your students for success in a specific program.

For applicants who apply by March 1st, what date does their Adult Learning Centre need to submit their semester 2 interm grades by?

  • May 1 is the deadline for receipt of interim high school grades (excludes University 1). Final grades are required for any completed courses, and midterm grades should be provided for any courses in progress which will be completed by June 30.
  • July 7 is the final documentation deadline for all outstanding documentation, including final high school grades.
  • August 31 is the final documentation deadline for fall term University 1 applicants. We recommend following the July 7 deadline so the student can receive an offer before UM course registration opens in mid-July.

Who do I contact if I have specific questions about scholarship-eligible courses listed in the Academic Course Guide, or what courses are considered and not-considered for entrance scholarships?

As a first step, we encourage counsellors to review the Academic Course Guide to see if the course in question appears. If you have questions about specific courses and how they are categorized in the guide, please contact the Financial Aid and Awards team at awards@umanitoba.ca.  As for decision making around what courses are considered for scholarships, you may reach out to the Financial Aid and Awards team to provide any feedback: awards@umanitoba.ca

Does UM offer an early admission date for University 1? What are the advantages of applying early?

March 1 is the application deadline for all of our Direct Entry programs (excluding Music, which has an earlier application deadline of Jan. 15).  Students applying to University 1 are also encouraged to apply by March 1. Applying by the March 1st deadline to any of our programs, including University 1, allows students to be considered for entrance scholarships; U1 applicants specifically may also receive earlier admission offers provided they meet the U1 admission requirements. Manitoba high school students currently in Grade 12 who apply before the March 1 deadline are also not required to submit high school transcripts -- Admissions will request interim and final grades for all current Manitoba high school students who apply before the March 1 deadline.

What are the requirements for international students who graduate with a MB high school diploma but are not Permanent Residents or Canadian Citizens?  Do they pay international tuition fees?

Any student who is not a Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen will be considered an international student when they apply to UM and will be required to pay international application and tuition fees. International students who graduate from Manitoba high schools, however, are excluded from needing a PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter). Students, depending on their home country, may also need to demonstrate they meet the university’s English language proficiency requirements.

What are some of the new experiential opportunities being offered? Are they offered in all faculties?

Experiential Learning opportunities range from participation in campus clubs and student organizations, to community-service learning, to co-op work placements. Some experiences are open to all students, while others may be program-specific. Students are encouraged to review the Experience Learning catalogue to search for opportunities – we offer over 200! Most faculties will offer experiential learning opportunities of some sort, however, the types of opportunities offered may vary depending on the program.

Accessibility for students

Applying to UM

Applications for fall admission are available every year in October. Students will complete their application for admission online and should review the admission requirements and high school pre-requisites for their intended program prior to starting an application.

High school students may apply via the direct entry route into a faculty/college or program. This means beginning their studies in University 1 (U1) or a program that offers a direct entry option. Encourage your students to review the Direct Entry admission requirements for their intended program prior to beginning their application to determine what high school courses are necessary for admission.

Counsellors and students can use the First Year Planning Guide to identify required first year university courses for any UM degree program – select the program name from the guide index and you will be taken to a page that lists course and elective requirements as well as information about high school course pre-requisites and minimum grades.

Direct entry application process

  • October: Applications for fall admission go live
  • October–March 1: Students apply for admission
  • December–March: Conditional offers of admission issued to select early applicants
  • December 1: Application deadline for Leader of Tomorrow and Indigenous Leader of Tomorrow Entrance Scholarships
  • January 15: Application deadline for direct entry to Desautels Faculty of Music
  • March 1*: Direct Entry application deadline and General Entrance Scholarship application deadline
  • Late March: Admissions requests final first semester grades and midterm second semester grades for Manitoba high school students who have applied before March 1
  • May 1:  Deadline for out of province and international students to submit interim transcripts
  • May – June:  Admission offers issued
  • May – June:  Students accept offers of admission
  • Mid-June:  Admissions requests final grades for Manitoba high school students
  • July 7:  Deadline for out of province and international students to submit final transcripts

*While students are encouraged to apply for admission to University 1 by March 1, the final application deadline for University 1 is May 1 for international students and August 1 for Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents.

Application fee

  • The application fee for Canadian citizens and permanent residents is $100.00 CDN.
  • The application fee for international students is $130.00 CDN.

Conditional offers of admission

Students who apply prior to March 1 may receive a conditional offer of admission based on their self-reported grades. Conditional offers are provided for select programs between December and March depending on the date of application and are not to be confused with official admission offers, which are provided after first semester final and second semester interim grades have been assessed.

Grade requests for Manitoba high school students

  • Individual schools and school divisions will be asked to provide interim grades for all Manitoba high school students who have applied to the University of Manitoba by March 1. Final grades will also be requested in June.
  • A key component of this process is the provincial ID number - please encourage students to include this number in their applications.
  • As part of the application process, each Manitoba high school student gives the university permission to request grades on their behalf. A secure file is sent to school or school division contacts who create electronic grade files to submit securely to the UM servers.
  • The school or school division can expect the grade request from the University of Manitoba at the end of March for students who apply by March 1. At that time, we expect all final grade 12 marks for courses completed up to that point as well as interim or mid-term marks for the second term. For schools that are not on a two-semester system, we receive some form of official mid-term assessment. We encourage grades to be sent by mid-April so decisions can be processed based on official grades.
  • An additional grade request will be sent out in the middle of June. At that time, we expect all final grades and graduation details to be included.
  • Students who apply in mid-or-late-June, or after their high school has closed for the summer, are responsible for personally submitting their official, final transcript – Admissions does not request transcripts from high schools for late applicants.

Admission and scholarship offers

  • Students who apply by March 1 and have submitted all required documents by the deadlines provided in their Application Portal should expect to be notified of their admission decision sometime in May or June. Most offers of admission must be accepted by June 1.
  • Entrance scholarship offers are typically provided to eligible students in May or June, shortly after admission offers have been made. Students should follow the instructions in their entrance scholarship offer for details on how to accept their scholarship.

Next steps for admitted students

  • A number of supports are available to newly admitted students to help them prepare for course registration, including tutorial videos, the First Year Planning Guide and orientation events. See our suite of Next Steps materials for information on making the transition from high school to university.

Next steps for new students

Scholarships and awards

The University of Manitoba provides more than $35 million in scholarship and bursary support to students. High school students may be eligible for some awards automatically while others require specific applications. Encourage your students to familiarize themselves with our scholarship opportunities and prepare by taking the appropriate high school courses.

General entrance scholarships

General entrance scholarships ranging from $1,000 - $3,000 may be awarded to eligible students who meet the entrance scholarship requirements and apply for Direct Entry admission prior to March 1. Counsellors and educators are encouraged to use the Academic 40S course guide (PDF) to determine which senior level courses may be considered for general entrance scholarships.

University of Manitoba General Entrance Scholarship requirements

Other entrance awards, such as BMO Leader of Tomorrow and Indigenous Leader of Tomorrow entrance scholarships, may require separate applications and have award-specific requirements and deadlines. Encourage your students to familiarize themselves with the many scholarship and award opportunities listed below.

Counsellors and students can explore scholarship and award opportunities using our searchable Awards Database. Search by program, year of study, student type and more!
