    Study counselling

This program is ideal if you work or volunteer in a counselling context, as a professional or paraprofessional counsellor. For those without counselling experience, it is recommended that you seek out volunteer opportunities prior to or while you are in the program. It is important that you have an opportunity to practice the skills you learn in class with actual clients on a regular basis.

    Personal suitability criteria

The program focuses on the development of practical counselling strategies. It is not intended to be therapeutic and it is expected that participants have dealt with traumatic issues, in some manner, prior to entering the program. You must be willing to reflect critically on personal values and attitudes and not carry any discrimination with you, be ready to actively participate as a learner and demonstrate skills learned in practice situations, and be willing to address and resolve conflicts respectfully, maintaining professional and ethical behavior according to the Counselling Code of Ethics, and disclosing any criminal conviction and child abuse record that may occur while in the program. Personal unsuitability may prevent you from being admitted to the program or require that you withdraw.

    Integrating Indigenous perspectives

Our commitment is to integrate Indigenous perspectives and worldviews into several courses within this program. This is an important and necessary revision given Indigenous Peoples are one of the fastest growing demographics, both in Manitoba and Canada. It is also in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action as we work together to be more inclusive, responsive, and respectful to the First Peoples of Canada. It is important to recognize that Indigenous Peoples have diverse worldviews, cultural traditions and ways of knowing that enhance their health and wellness as individuals and within their broader communities. These are important considerations as we work together on our path to reconciliation; which is especially important in the helping profession.
