Frequently asked questions

UM student access

What is the Sport and Rec Fee?

The Sport and Rec Fee was approved by the University’s Board of Governors in 2011 and supports the UM’s commitment to active living, sport and recreation.

The Fee is mandatory and applied to all students’ tuition based on their status of part-time or full-time study, regardless of access to facilities, as the fee is not a user fee. With the goal of universally promoting wellness across our campuses through access to programming, the decision was made to not allow for opting out.

The Sport and Rec Fee will be applied to all UM students’ tuition at a reduced rate for the Winter Term. The rate, 70 percent of the standard Sport and Rec Fee, will be assessed at $62.92 for full-time students and $47.18 for part-time students.

I am a UM student, do I have access to the gym?

Yes - UM students will have access to the Active Living Centre at the Fort Garry campus and the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre at the Bannatyne campus.

All UM students will be required to complete an Assumption of Risk, Release of liability, Waiver of Claims and Indemnity Agreement by logging in to your Aurora account and following the pathway outlined below:

  • Enrollment & Academic Records > Declarations > Gym waiver/agreement

If you are under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign your Gym Waiver/Agreement.  Please visit our website to download and print the form.  The fully completed form must be emailed to rec_services@umanitoba.ca to be processed.

I am a UM student at Bannatyne campus, do I have access to the gym?

Yes - UM students will have access to the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre at the Bannatyne campus and the Active Living Centre at the Fort Garry campus.

UM faculty/staff, alumni and community memberships

I was in the middle of my membership contract. What are my options for my membership?

When we closed our doors on November 11, your Recreation Services membership was frozen, and upon opening on February 16, we will automatically add the number of days closed from November 11, 2020, onto the original end date of your membership. No action needs to be taken on your part to begin booking your workouts.

If you are unable to complete the waiver online, please call our customer service team at 204-474-6100.

If you did not reactivate your membership in 2020, you would have the option to buy a new membership.

Can I freeze my membership?

We understand you may not be ready to reactivate your membership. If you do not complete the waiver to reactivate your membership, we will automatically apply a prorated credit to your account for membership, locker and towel service (if applicable) for future use. When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options.

If you pay your membership on a payroll deduction or through a payment plan and had previously activated your membership, we will automatically activate your membership. If you had not previously activated your membership, we would not restart deductions until you complete the waiver to reactivate your membership.  When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options.

Is my membership being reactivated automatically or do I have to call in?

Memberships are not being reactivated automatically.

Please watch your email for instructions on reactivating your membership, which includes completing an online waiver.  Once your waiver is complete and membership reactivated, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to book your workout time slot.

If you are unable to complete the waiver online, please call our Customer Service team at 204-474-6100.

We understand you may not be ready to reactivate your membership. If you do not complete the waiver to reactivate your membership, we automatically applied a prorated credit to your account for membership, locker and towel service (if applicable) for future use.   When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options.

The number of times we will extend memberships will be based on the number of days we were closed and the amount of time you had left on your membership.

Can I have a refund on my membership?

If you do not want to reactivate your membership at this time, a prorated credit will automatically be applied to your account for future use.

If you are not offering towel service, can I have a refund?

At this time, the Active Living Center continues to do its part to stop the spread of Covid-19. We will suspend towel service until further notice, and a prorated credit will be applied to your account for future use.

Booking and planning your workout or activity

Why do I have to pre-book my workout or activity?

As we are operating at a reduced capacity, you must pre-book workout and activity times. By pre-booking your time, you are guaranteed entry into the facility during that time slot.

Time slots are 90 minutes long.

The Active Living Centre South Doors will be open 5 minutes before each workout start-time and remain open for 15 minutes.

We ask patrons to be respectful of this process and exit the building within 15 minutes of the end of the time slot.

How many times am I allowed to book in a day?

Members are permitted to book for one 90-minute session a day.

When can I book my workout or activity?

Time slots can be booked no more than two days in advance and open up at 7 a.m.

To book your time slot, please log in to our online registration site.

This short tutorial video demonstrates how to book your time. Please note we have added more bookable activities since the tutorial video was made.

How do I cancel my workout or activity time slot after I have signed-up? Will I be charged for classes I cancel?

You can cancel your time slot through our online registration system or by calling the customer service desk at 204-474-6100.

At this time, there is no charge to cancel or change a time slot. We ask that you cancel at least 8 hours in advance to allow for others to book a time. Failure to do so may result in lost booking privileges.

Please watch our tutorial video for more information on how to cancel your booking.

Do I have to take the self-screening test before every booking?

Yes, all staff, students, and members must take the self-screening test before entering the facility.
