Arts financial aid and awards

These awards are offered to students who:

• are registered in a degree program in the Faculty of Arts at the time of submission of the award application
• have been accepted into an exchange with an approved international partner institution of the University of Manitoba at the time of submission of the award application
• have provided evidence of application for other student exchange financial support
• demonstrate financial need
• have strong academic achievement in their degree program (appropriate to their year of study in their program), normally indicated by a degree GPA of 3.0 or better

$500 – $1,000 depending on the number of qualified applicants

Disbursement of award

Funds will be awarded by way of a credit to your University of Manitoba Aurora Student account, in mid- to late October.

If you do not participate in the exchange program, the funds will be returned to the Faculty of Arts and debited from your Aurora student account. Also, you must remain a student in the Faculty of Arts for the duration of your exchange program to receive this award.

The available annual interest from the fund (approximately $200) will be used to offer one scholarship to a student who:

• has completed at least 60 credit hours of a Bachelor of Arts degree in an honours or major program in Economics, Labour Studies, or Global Political Economy
• has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5
• has written the best research paper (with a minimum grade of B+), as determined by the selection committee, in one of the following subjects: Canadian economic, labour and/or social history; environment and sustainability; regional development; comparative economic systems; gender; political economy; the socio-economic significance of arts and culture
• in the next ensuing academic session, is enrolled full time in the Faculty of Arts, in one of the programs listed in criterion (1)

Candidates for the award must be nominated by their instructors.

Each year one scholarship will be offered to an undergraduate student who:

• is enrolled full time (minimum 80 per cent course load) in the third year of study in the Faculty of Arts, in a major or honours program in either French, Political Studies, or English
• has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5
• is an active participant with the University of Manitoba student newspaper, The Manitoban, or the University of Manitoba student radio station, UMFM

Three annual scholarships with a maximum amount of $1,000 each and two annual bursaries with a maximum amount of $500 each are available to student members of University College.

To become a member of University College, please select University College as your college of choice (option 07) when you register for your program online in Aurora.

Scholarships are available to University College students who:

• have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours in an undergraduate program with a minimum grade point average of 3.0
• are a member of University College
• have made a significant contribution to the life of University College
• continue in the ensuing academic year as members of University College

Bursaries are available to University college students who:

• have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours in an undergraduate program with a minimum grade point average of 2.5
• are a member of University College
• have made a significant contribution to the life of University College
• continue in the ensuing academic year as members of University College
• demonstrate financial need on the standard University of Manitoba bursary application

Two scholarships valued at $6,000 each are available to Faculty of Arts students who:

• have completed at least 24 credit hours of full-time study
• have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5
• have registered for 24 credit hours (80% course load) of full-time study for the subsequent year of undergraduate study
• are Canadian citizens
• demonstrate exceptional community involvement, excellent communication skills and have outstanding abilities and achievements

This $1,000 prize is awarded to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in any year of their studies who has demonstrated outstanding research and writing ability.

The purpose of the award is to support scholarship and research on any issue in the field of Canada on the world stage, or of Western Canada.

This fund provides graduate and senior undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts with financial support to attend a conference in their discipline at which they will present a paper, or play a role of similar significance.

An award will be given annually to a graduate student who:

• is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, either at the Master's or PhD level, in a Faculty of Arts program or in the PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies offered through the Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice
• has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the last 60 credit hours of study
• has completed the necessary course work towards the degree
• has obtained approval for a thesis or dissertation proposal prior to undertaking the research funded by this award
• is conducting graduate research into the causes of human conflict and the processes of peace building.

At least three awards, of up to $3,000 each, will be given annually to graduate students in good standing in programs offered in the Faculty of Arts, to support research toward the completion of a thesis or dissertation.

Students in interdisciplinary (IDP) programs are also eligible if their thesis or dissertation supervisor is in the Faculty of Arts.

Each year one fellowship, valued at $10,000 will be offered to support scholarship and research on any issue in the field of international relations and/or international comparative studies.

A scholarship with a maximum value of $5,000 will be offered annually to a graduate student who:

• has completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba
• is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, in the first year of a Master's program delivered by a department in the Faculty of Arts
• has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 based on the last 60 credit hours of study
• has volunteered within and outside their role as a student
• has demonstrated strong leadership abilities

Two awards of equal value (approximately $3,000) will be given annually to graduate students who:

• are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, either at the Master's or PhD level, in a program delivered by a department in the Faculty of Arts in the year in which the fellowship is tenable
• have completed at least one Regular Session (or two terms) in the chosen program to date
• have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the last 60 credit hours of study (or equivalent)
• have undertaken or have proposed to undertake research focused on issues related to Indigenous Canadian people or to persons with disabilities

One fellowship will be offered to a student whose research focuses on issues related to Indigenous Canadian people and one will be offered to a student whose research concerns issues related to persons with disabilities.

Each year, more than $2 million in university graduate fellowships are offered to full-time master’s and PhD students to recognize and support academic excellence. The fellowships are offered to students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment.

Students must be recommended by their department or unit to the Faculty of Graduate Studies for a UM Graduate Fellowship.

This award recognizes a professor in the Faculty of Arts who has best demonstrated excellence in teaching, outstanding research and who has an exemplary record of service. 

Eligibility

One $1500 award will be given each spring to a faculty member in the Faculty of Arts who:

• hold tenure and the rank of Professor or Associate Professor at the time of nomination.
• have taught at least seven (7) years in the Faculty of Arts since their promotion to the rank of Associate Professor at the time of nomination.

Individuals are only eligible to receive this award once during their tenure at the University of Manitoba.

The name of the recipient will be engraved on the Faculty of Arts' Wall of Recognition.

Nomination deadline: April 30. Nominations are accepted all year. Nominations include the nomination form AND three (3) letters of support from persons in addition to the nominator.

This award recognizes faculty who promote an increase in students’ awareness of international culture, perspective and issues through teaching activities. Examples might include courses integrating international experience, teaching material based on research in other countries and facilitating international student exchange.

Eligibility

One $1000 award (to be used for research, travel or professional development activities) will be given each spring to a full-time faculty member in the Faculty of Arts.

The name of the recipient will be engraved on the Faculty of Arts' Wall of Recognition.

1 - Established Faculty Category for Professors

Eligibility

One $1000 award will be given each spring to an established faculty member in the Faculty of Arts who:

• is in a post-probation position (i.e. individuals who hold tenure).
• have taught at least two (2) years in the Faculty of Arts.

2 - Established Faculty Category for Instructors

Eligibility

One $1000 award will be given each spring to an established faculty member in the Faculty of Arts who:

• is in a post-probation position (i.e. individuals who have a continuing appointment).
• have taught at least two (2) years in the Faculty of Arts.

Individuals are only eligible to receive this award once every five (5) years and five (5) years must elapse between receiving a New Faculty Teaching Award and an Established Faculty Teaching Award.

The name of the recipient will be engraved on the Faculty of Arts' Wall of Recognition.

After verifying the nominee’s eligibility, the nominee will be asked to submit the following information:

1 - New Faculty Category for Professors

Eligibility

One $1000 award will be given each spring to a new faculty member in the Faculty of Arts who:

• has taught at least two (2) years in the Faculty of Arts and are either permanent or limited term, professor rank UMFA faculty members. Individuals will only be considered in their third (3rd) through sixth (6th) years of service.
• have not been the recipient of the Faculty of Arts New Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in previous years.

Eligibility

One $1000 award will be given each spring to a new faculty member in the Faculty of Arts who:

• has taught at least two (2) years in the Faculty of Arts and are either permanent or limited term, instructor rank UMFA faculty members. Individuals will only be considered in their third (3rd) through sixth (6th) years of service.
• have not been the recipient of the Faculty of Arts New Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in previous years.

This award recognizes and rewards excellence in teaching by sessional instructors.

Eligibility

One $1000 award will be given each spring to a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Arts who:

• have taught at least three-credit hours in the Faculty within the preceding 12 months, including summer session.
• do not qualify for any other Faculty of Arts Teaching Excellence award categories.

The name of the recipient will be engraved on the Faculty of Arts' Wall of Recognition.

Nomination deadline: April 30. Nominations are accepted all year. Nominations include the nomination form AND a nomination letter.

After verifying the nominee’s eligibility, the nominee will be asked to submit the following information:

These awards recognize and reward excellence in teaching by graduate students. The awards are sponsored by the Arts Graduating Classes of 1943 and 1968 and the Dean of Arts.

Eligibility

Two $500 awards will be given each spring to graduate students in the Faculty of Arts who:

• are responsible for teaching either a three- or six-credit hour course in the faculty during the regular session immediately preceding the nomination submission deadline date.
• have not been the recipient of the Faculty of Arts Graduate Student Teaching Excellence Award in previous years.

The names of the recipients will be engraved on the Faculty of Arts' Wall of Recognition.

Nomination deadline: April 30. Nominations are accepted all year. Nominations include the nomination form AND a nomination letter.

In addition, the nominees must submit a teaching dossier containing the following information:

Required documentation

1. A letter of support from one of the following: department head, associate department head, chair of the department's graduate program or nominee's graduate supervisor.
2. The results of a standardized teaching evaluation survey currently used by the University the Manitoba: the Student Evaluation of Education Quality, or SEEQ, as administered by the nominee's department.

Optional documentation

Nominees are encouraged to add any other relevant evidence to their teaching dossier. Additional documentation might include:

• letters of support from faculty members who are familiar with the nominee's teaching.
• evidence of leadership activities in the area of teaching, such as assisting a faculty member in conducting a workshop for teaching assistants.
• evidence of efforts to improve their own teaching, such as attendance at the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) or the Centre for Higher Education Research and Development (CHERD) workshops; or non-credit or credit teaching courses.
• research on teaching, publications, or presentations to graduate student groups, their department or at conferences.
• other evidence of outstanding teaching or teaching-related performance.
