ARTlab
This award winning building offers creative spaces of the highest caliber. Students from all areas of the School of Art have access to tool and equipment cribs, a wood shop, and professional quality digital printing facilities. A large, smart lecture theatre seats 147 people and is suitable for performances or projection programming.

MACLab digital production
The MACLab is designed for creating digital works in photography, graphic design, web design, animation, and video.
Facilities include:
- classroom and student lab with over 40 Mac workstations equipped with industry-standard creative software, including Creative Cloud
- student media lounge accessible to students at all times
- digital print room with 64” wide archival quality printers
- large format Epson scanners
- finishing room outfitted with perfect binder, saddle stitch, hot press, and matte cutter
Art Barn
The Art Barn is a two-story renovated dairy barn providing well-ventilated loft studios for painting. Facilities include:

Custom-made adjustable wood or stacking metal easels for small to very large painting surfaces

Building resources
Taché Hall
The L.L. Fitzgerald Wing of Taché Hall (adjacent to and connected to ARTlab via two skywalks) houses student galleries, new wet photography labs and darkrooms, vacuum former, media crib, graduate and fourth year honours studios and faculty offices.
Media Crib
The Media Crib is located in Room 147 Taché Hall.
Hours of operation: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
School of Art Students with a valid Media Crib membership may borrow DSLR and analogue cameras, video cameras, audio recording gear, lighting kits, tripods, projectors, monitors, and other equipment for their projects.
Yearly memberships are available for purchase through the Media Crib, and are priced as follows:
- BFA Student, September 1–April 30: $67.00
- MFA Student, September 1–August 31: $100.00
- BFA Student, May 1–August 31: $33.00
After you have paid for your membership and signed an Equipment Loan Agreement (PDF), you will receive a coloured sticker to place on your UM ID card

Building resources
Ceramics and sculpture building
This large single-story building was specifically designed and constructed for three-dimensional media, ceramics, and sculpture.
Ceramics facilities include a full spectrum of contemporary and functional ceramics practices:
- clay and slip-making equipment
- fully stocked glaze lab and plaster room
- electric and kick wheels as well as slab roller
- firing capacities include electric, experimental, and a recently constructed wood-fired “Train” kiln
Sculpture facilities include:
- large facility with high ceilings and wide doorways accommodate works of considerable scale
- metalworking including MIG and TIG welders, plasma cutter, slip roller, blast cabinet, and small foundry
- fully equipped carpentry shop
- large selection of hand and power tools
- fume room

Card swipe building access
Card swipe building access is available for all registered School of Art students from Monday to Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.
- Access expires the Tuesday after the weekend of the last day of classes (excluding MFA students).
- Card swipe access is available on statutory holidays. However, there is no card swipe access during the December shut down.
Working alone
If you plan to work or study late at night or on the weekend in a School of Art studio:
- Study with a partner or friend.
- Leave your phone number with someone at home so they can contact you, if necessary.
- Make sure you know where the nearest telephone is located.
- Avoid isolated areas.
- Call UM Security Services (UMSS) for a Safewalk anytime of the day or night to escort you from one location to another on campus.
- Work with a partner or friend if you are using dangerous equipment or materials.
- Locate the nearest emergency phones, first aid kit, eye wash stations, and other safety equipment so you know where to go in case of an emergency.
