Application required Carl R. Nelson Travelling Fellowship in Landscape Architecture

The fellowship shall be offered to graduate students who:

  • are enrolled as full-time students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the Master’s program in the Department of Landscape Architecture
  • have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3 on all courses completed in the Department of Landscape Architecture
  • has submitted a maximum 500 word statement outlining their travel intent.

Application required Charles H. Thomsen Award in Landscape Architecture

The awards shall be offered to graduate and undergraduate students who:

  • are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Architecture, in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Environmental Design program (Landscape and Urbanism Option), or in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in either the pre-Master’s or the Master of Landscape Architecture program
  • have achieved a minimum sessional grade point average of 3.0 (or equivalent) in the previous year of study
  • have submitted a statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining the objectives for a community outreach project related to landscape architecture or environmental design

Application required David J. Paterson Entrance Scholarship

Value: $700

The available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one scholarship to a graduate student who:

  • will be enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the first year of study in the Master of Landscape Architecture program offered through the Faculty of Architecture;
  • has achieved a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 based on previous 60 credit hours (or equivalent) of study; and
  • has demonstrated an interest in rural landscapes, rural field studies and/or the land. In order to demonstrate how they meet criterion,
  • candidates must submit a written statement (maximum 500 words) outlining their interest in rural landscapes, rural field studies and/or the land.

Application required Department of Landscape Architecture Graduate Fellowship

The fellowship is available to:

  • is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the second year of study in the Master of Landscape Architecture degree program offered through the Faculty of Architecture;
  • has achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 based on the last 60 credit hours (or equivalent) of study; and
  • has submitted an approved thesis/practicum research proposal.

Application required Ted McLachlan Community Engagement Scholarship

Value: $2,000
Deadline: January 31, 2026

The scholarship will be offered to a graduate student who:

  • is enrolled full-time or part-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the first year of study in the Master of Landscape Architecture program at the University of Manitoba;
  • has achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.3 based on the last 60 credit hours (or equivalent) of study;
  • has, in the opinion of the selection committee, demonstrated a strong commitment to volunteerism and community engagement outside of the University of Manitoba.
  • has submitted a brief CV outlining their volunteer and community engagement activities.

Application required Joys of Landscape Prize

Value: $1,000
Deadline: January 9, 2026

Each year, beginning in 2016-2017, at least one scholarship of up to $1,000 will be offered to a student who:

  1. either:
  • an undergraduate student, is enrolled full-time in the Landscape Architecture/Landscape + Urbanism stream
  • a graduate student, is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the Master of Landscape Architecture program, in the Department of Landscape Architecture
  1. has achieved:
  • a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5
  • works in the studio environment on a regular basis as determined and verified by a professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture
  • demonstrates involvement in extra-curricular activities within the Faculty of Architecture
  • has completed both of the following: (i) performed and documented a creative public act of social commentary and artistic expression for the benefit of a larger audience (respecting all Canadian and Manitoba laws, City of Winnipeg and/or University of Manitoba campus regulations); (ii) shared or distributed the “public act of expression” with the Faculty of Architecture in at least one of the following forums:
    1. Coffee Haus
    2. Dodgeball
    3. a solo exhibition or presentation within Centre Space, adjoining classrooms, Arch II Gallery, University Centre Gallery or other on-campus gallery
    4. a Center Space gallery critique of any graduate or undergraduate studio review—before or after the critique or review, without interrupting any actual presentations or discussion by others
    5. a spontaneous presentation
    6. Social media platforms – Facebook, X, Instagram.

Candidates may choose to apply on their own, or they may be nominated by another student

To be considered for the award, the following must be submitted as an application to the Department of Landscape Architecture:

  • a letter of reference from a professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture that includes written verification indicating the candidate meets criterion
  • one letter of reference from a fellow student
  • a statement (maximum 500 words), written either by the candidate or their nominator, that indicates how the candidate meets criterion
  • documentation (audio or visual media) that verifies that the student has completed the activities outlined above. This documentation should include jpeg images (digital and printed) at a minimum of 1800 x 2700 pixels, short video clips up to 30 seconds, and any other media the student prefers.
