Fall 2024: Move In
August 31, 2024 - September 1, 2024
Check-in hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm
If you are arriving after 5pm, please contact the Dons team: 204-291-5687
Move in details: Go to the main Residence entrance on the north side of the building (17 Sifton Road). Parking is available in the loading zone. A member of the Dons Team will be there to meet you. Otherwise, call the Don on Duty at 204.291.5687.
If you plan on arriving early, please contact Dean of Residence, Matthew Bowman.

What to bring?
Below is a recommended list of items to bring with you when moving into Residence.

- Sheets (beds are 80 inches long by 36 inches wide)

- Warm blankets
2) For Your Desk
- Desk lamp
- Computer

- Alarm Clock

3) For Your Closet

- Basic cleaning supplies for your room

- Hairdyer, curling iron, etc

5) Clothing
- Warm clothing
- Winter coat

6) Everything Else
- Refrigerator - Five cubic feet or smaller
- Travel mugs/plastic water bottles
- School supplies
If you don't have some of these items, there are many stores close to campus where they can be bought.
7) Room Decorations
Students are more than welcome to decorate their room as they see fit. However students are not allowed to:
- Build lofts in their room
- Bring large items (e.g.: full-sized fridge)
- Remove or alter any assigned furniture
- Damage the walls or paint
8) Posters and Pictures
Please be sure to follow the Best Practices to keep the walls clean.
Do NOT use masking tape or packing tape when putting up posters. Do NOT hand anything offensive on the outside of your windows or door.
For hanging up pictures, use 3M 'Command' Adhesive products.
When removing the hooks follow the instructions carefully to make sure there is no damage.
Helpful information
Bedding
Residents are responsible for their own bedding. The beds are 36" wide x 80" long (twin size bedframe).
For your convenience, you can pre-order your sheets online from stores to be delivered to St John’s office before you arrive.
The St Johns Residence Office will accept the delivery on your behalf. Delivery address should be:

Bikes
Bikes are not permitted to be stored in residence. There is a residence storage room that can be accessed by talking to a residence Don. There is also a bike stand on the Southwest end of the building where you can lock up your bike.
Bus Travel
Winnipeg transit offers a comprehensive guide for getting around Winnipeg. You can find all of your options by visiting Navigo. There is also a shuttle bus service that runs between the Bannatyne campus and the Fort Garry campus. See the Parking Services website for details.
Room Decorations
Residents may decorate their room however they want, however there are a few restrictions:
Do Not:
- Remove, move, or alter furniture
- Damage walls or paint
- Mount any poster on the outside of their door or window that is offensive in nature.
Guest Policy
You are expected to assume responsibility for the actions of your guests and you will be held accountable for a guest's violation of the Residence Contract. If problems arise with your guest (E.g. drunkenness, or any infraction of the contract), you may forfeit your privilege of having future guests, and a College representative may ask your guest to leave. Rooms are contracted to Residents for their private use only. If you wish to have a guest for more than two consecutive nights, make advance arrangements with the Dean of Residence. Long-term guests are not permitted. For more details on guest policy, please visit the Residence Contract.
Holiday Break Shut Down
You are welcome to stay in residence during the holiday break, but you must let the general office know. There will be no food service during some holidays. Please refer to the “Residence Service Interruptions” section on the Residence Contract for more details.
Insurance
St Johns College is not responsible for your personal belongings. It is recommended that you purchase tenants insurance through your insurance broker. Some residents may be covered by your family's house insurance.
Before you talk to an insurance broker you may want to think about the following:
- What is the value of my possessions
- What is covered by the policy?
- Does the insurance cover my belongings during moving in/out
- You are responsible for reporting thefts to campus security.
Laundry
There are laundry facilities in the basement level of St Johns Residence.
Located in the basement of the Residence, students can use the facility at a $10 deposit. Be sure to return your card to the General Office at the end of the year for $10 refund.
Mail is delivered to the General Office on weekday mornings, where it is collected by the Don on duty and put under the door of your room. If you get a parcel, you will receive a package slip when it’s delivered and then you can pick it up from the General Office. Please bring the package slip to the general office when picking up your parcel.
Office hours are from Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Parking
Parking passes can be purchased through Parking Services. It is highly recommended to purchase your parking in advance because it sells out quickly. St Johns residents have a section of the A-lot assigned to them (the row along the residence. Parking maps and additional details may be found at the Parking Services website.
Pets
No pets are allowed in residence.
Smoking
St Johns adheres to the Clean Indoor Air Policy which prohibits smoking of any substance in or around any building on campus. All students must follow the UM smoking policy. Smokers must be eight meters (25 feet) or more away from any building entrance. Residents violating this policy will be penalized.

Move out details
Unless prior arrangements have been made, check-out time is 11:00 a.m. on your scheduled date of departure.
For students staying for only the Fall term, move-out is December 22, 2023;
For students staying for the entire 2023-2024 academic year, move-out is April 27, 2024.
Full year students are able to remain in residence over the Winter Closure without charge.
Check-out procedure
- Ensure the Dons team is notified ahead of time that you are moving out.
- Room assessment and turning in your room key and temporary access card is completed.
- Ensure room is clean, garbage is disposed into garbage shed outside north entrance.
- All belongings are removed.
- Refunds for your laundry card deposit and balance available at the General Office.
