Graduate Studies Fees

The Board of Governors has approved a tuition fee increase on all program and ancillary fees for 2019-2020; new fee rates have been posted.

Individual fee assessments for Fall and Winter Terms are available in Aurora.

Graduate Tuition Fees commence at the first registration following admission to a specific degree program and are NOT transferable between programs or degrees.

All Graduate students must pay the full tuition cost prior to graduation regardless of courses transferred in or number of terms required to complete the program. For course-based programs, additional fees may be assessed on a per course pro rata basis if additional credit hours are required.

Graduate Studies students, including Pre-Masters Students, are also assessed other applicable fees, including Student Services Fees, Endowment Fees, and Student Organization Fees. Refer to Other Compulsory Fees and Other Graduate Student Fees

Graduate Studies (including Pre-Masters) students enrolling in courses that are not part of their Masters or PhD program are assessed fees at the per credit hour course rate of the teaching unit for those courses.

Pre-Masters Programs

The Board of Governors has approved an increase to tuition fees for all programs and to ancillary fee for the 2019-2020 academic year; new fee rates have been posted.

All Pre-Masters students are assessed fees at the per credit hour course rate of the teaching unit for those courses.

Fees paid by a student while registered as a Pre-Masters student are not transferable to a graduate degree program at a later date.

Transfer from the Master’s to the Ph.D. program

Students who transfer to the Ph.D. program from a Masters program will be placed in the Two Year or Three Year Ph. D. program based on the Faculty of Graduate Studies regulations found in the Academic Guide. Once this placement has been determined, students may refer to the Registrar’s Office to determine their status with respect to Program Fees.

Fees for Collaborative PhD Program
The Board of Governors has approved a tuition fee increase on all program and ancillary fees for 2019-2020; new fee rates have been posted.

If the University of Manitoba serves as the Lead University, students will be required to pay the same tuition and fees as all other students enrolled in a full-time doctoral program at the University of Manitoba. See PhD Programs.

If the University of Manitoba serves as the Partner University, students will be required to pay a Collaborative PhD continuing enrolment fee each Fall and Winter term until completion. In addition, students will be assessed the appropriate per credit-hour rate for any coursework completed at the University of Manitoba. Students will also be assessed all other applicable incidental and compulsory fees, including Student Service Fees, Endowment Fees and Student Organization Fees.

Continuing Fees
The Board of Governors has approved a tuition fee increase on all program and ancillary fees for 2019-2020; new fee rates have been posted.

A graduate student whose program of study extends over more than the period described in the Graduate Fees section is required to register in each succeeding year, and is charged the Continuing Fee. The Continuing Fee is assessed at the rate in effect at the time of the assessment.

Students who are assessed the Continuing Fee are also assessed other applicable fees, including Student Services Fees, Endowment Fees, and Student Organization Fees. Refer to Other Compulsory Fees and Other Graduate Student Fees.

If a student neglects to register and is permitted to resume studies at a later date, the Continuing fees for each year missed will be assessed.

2019-2020 Graduate Student Organization Fees

All Graduate Studies Students: $86.82 in Fall Term, $86.82 in Winter Term and $5.00 in Summer Term.

All full-time graduate students who are assessed Student Organization Fees are enrolled in the UMSU Health and Dental Plan and are automatically assessed a fee for this insurance on their tuition statements. See Incidental Fees.

Distance Education Courses

Correspondence courses are covered by the Graduate Program Fees if they are approved as part of the student's current program.

Extra Courses

Graduate Studies (including Pre-Masters) students enrolling in courses that are not part of their Masters or PhD program are assessed fees at the per credit hour course rate of the teaching unit for those courses. Fees paid for such courses are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Occasional Students

All occasional students are assessed the appropriate Undergraduate fees for each course based on teaching faculty. Fees paid by a student while registered as an occasional student for these courses are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Technology Services Fee

These fees are assessed at the following rates to cover costs associated with the use of technology in the teaching and learning environment.

Undergraduate students and graduate students in a course based program will be assessed a fee of $6.51 per credit hour, assessed on a maximum of 15 credit hours.
Undergraduate students paying a program fee will be assessed a flat fee of $97.73 per term to a maximum of $195.46 per Fall/Winter Session.
Full-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $97.73 per term to a maximum of $195.46 per Fall/Winter Session.
Part-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $48.86 per term to a maximum of $97.73 per Fall/Winter Session.

Laboratory Fees

The University of Manitoba assesses an additional fee for all course sections that include a laboratory component, based on the type of lab used; these fees are refundable only until the revision deadline for the applicable course.

Sport and Recreation Fee

This fee supports the University of Manitoba's commitment to active living, sports and recreation. The Sport and Recreation Fee will be assessed to all University of Manitoba students, excluding those with existing agreements precluding the payment of service fees to the U of M.

U-PASS Fee

Full-Time students who are UMSU or GSA members will be assessed a U-Pass (Universal Transit Pass) fee of $136.25 per Term (Fall & Winter).

Manitoba International Health Insurance Plan (MISHP)

All University of Manitoba International Students are enrolled in the Manitoba International Students Health Plan (MISHP). This plan provides primary health care benefits equivalent to Manitoba Health. Enrolment in MISHP is mandatory for international students. You may request to opt out if you are covered by Manitoba Health or if you are already covered by MISHP through another Manitoba institution. Opt outs are managed by the administrator: visit mishp.ca/contact-us.

Architecture Information Technology Fee

All students in Architecture will be assessed an Information Technology Fee of $466.88.

The Technology Fee includes $105.00 to be directed towards a technology endowment fund. Remaining funds will be expended on technology items of direct benefit to students.

Education Practicum and Field Experience Fee

A fee of $163.74 per 3 credit hours is assessed for all education practicum and field work, field experience or field placement courses.

Fine Arts Studio Enhancement & Technology Fee

All School of Art students will be assessed $50.75 in each of the Fall and Winter terms ($25.37 in Summer Term).

This fee will be used to cover the cost of new capital equipment for the School of Art studios in order to support the curriculum. The fee collected will enable the school to ensure all equipment is current and functioning.

Law Clinical/Exam Fee

All full and half-time Law students will be assessed $114.00 in Fall Term.

Pharmacy Field Work and Course Fee

Clinical fieldwork fee (BSc. Pharm): All Bachelor of Science Pharmacy students will be assessed the Clinical fieldwork fee ($3,164.75) at the rate of $1,582.37 per fall and winter term.

Clinical fieldwork Fee (Pharm.D.):
All Doctorate of Pharmacy students will be assessed the Clinical field work fee $3,600.00 at the rate of $1,800.00 per fall and winter term

Year 3 Course Fee (BSc. Pharm): All Year 3 students will be assessed a Course fee when registering for PHRM 3110; for the current fee rate, please see the comments for this course in the Class Schedule.

St. John's College or St. Paul's College Membership Fee

St. John's College membership fee:
$5.00, flat fee per term (less than 9 credit hours)

Examination Fees

A supplemental examination fee of $85.00 per exam paper (subject to change) is assessed when a student is granted the privilege of writing a Supplemental Examination; this excludes approved deferred exams.

An off-campus examination fee of $85.00 per exam paper (subject to change; plus invigilation and courier costs) is assessed when an application is made to write at a location which differs from the official university/departmental exam schedule; this excludes exams for Distance & Online Education courses.

Final Grade Appeal Fee

A fee of $50 (subject to change) is charged per final grade appealed and is refunded if the appeal is decided in favour of the student.

Letter of Permission Fee

A fee of $73.50 (subject to change) is charged per Letter of Permission application.

Locker Fee

Lockers may be made available to students in the building of their faculty or school (usually from their student council or association) with proof of payment of academic fees. The university reserves the right to allot one locker to more than one student. Locker fee rates are the responsibility of the student association.

Audit Courses

Graduate students auditing courses must register for the course(s) and will be charged a fee equal to one half of the fee normally associated with that course.

Extra Courses

Courses taken by graduate students in addition to those approved for their degree programs, are classified as OS (occasional) under "Course Category." For these courses, students are assessed the appropriate undergraduate fee based on teaching department for all courses taken. Fees paid for such courses are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Independent Study courses are covered by the Graduate Program Fees if they are approved as part of the student's current program.

Occasional Students

All occasional students are assessed the appropriate Undergraduate fees based on teaching department for all courses taken.

Fees paid by a student while registered as an occasional student are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Extra Courses

Technology Services Fee

These fees are assessed at the following rates to cover costs associated with the use of technology in the teaching and learning environment.

  • Undergraduate students and graduate students in a course based program will be assessed a fee of $6.28 per credit hour, assessed on a maximum of 15 credit hours.
  • Undergraduate students paying a program fee will be assessed a flat fee of $94.20 per term to a maximum of $188.40 per Fall/Winter Session.
  • Full-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $94.20 per term to a maximum of $188.40 per Fall/Winter Session.
  • Part-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $47.10 per term to a maximum of $94.20 per Fall/Winter Session.

Laboratory Fees

The University of Manitoba assesses an additional fee for all course sections that include a laboratory component, based on the type of lab used; these fees are refundable only until the revision deadline for the applicable course.

This fee supports the University of Manitoba's commitment to active living, sports and recreation. The Sport and Recreation Fee will be assessed to all University of Manitoba students, excluding those with existing agreements precluding the payment of service fees to the U of M.

All students in Architecture will be assessed an Information Technology Fee of $466.88.

Fine Arts Studio Enhancement & Technology Fee

All School of Art students will be assessed $50 in each of the Fall and Winter terms ($25 in Summer Term).

This fee will be used to cover the cost of new capital equipment for the School of Art studios in order to support the curriculum. The fee collected will enable the school to ensure all equipment is current and functioning.

Law Clinical/Exam Fee

All full and half-time Law students will be assessed $94.34 in Fall Term.

Pharmacy Field Work and Field Trip Fees

Clinical fieldwork fee: All Pharmacy students will be assessed the Clinical fieldwork fee ($3,117.99) at the rate of $1,558.99 per fall and winter term.

Year 3 field trip fee: All Year 3 students will be assessed a Field Trip fee when registering for PHRM 3110; for the current fee rate, please see the comments for this course in the Class Schedule.

Lockers may be made available to students in the building of their faculty or school (usually from their student council or association) with proof of payment of academic fees. The university reserves the right to allot one locker to more than one student. Locker fee rates are the responsibility of the student association.

Audit Courses

Graduate students auditing courses must register for the course(s) and will be charged a fee equal to one half of the fee normally associated with that course.

Extra Courses

Courses taken by graduate students in addition to those approved for their degree programs, are classified as OS (occasional) under "Course Category." For these courses, students are assessed the appropriate undergraduate fee based on teaching department for all courses taken. Fees paid for such courses are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Independent Study courses are covered by the Graduate Program Fees if they are approved as part of the student's current program.

Occasional Students

All occasional students are assessed the appropriate Undergraduate fees based on teaching department for all courses taken.

Fees paid by a student while registered as an occasional student are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Examination Fees

A supplemental examination fee of $85.00 per exam paper (subject to change) is assessed when a student is granted the privilege of writing a Supplemental Examination; this excludes approved deferred exams.

An off-campus examination fee of $85.00 per exam paper (subject to change; plus invigilation and courier costs) is assessed when an application is made to write at a location which differs from the official university/departmental exam schedule; this excludes exams for Distance & Online Education courses.

Final Grade Appeal Fee

A fee of $50 (subject to change) is charged per final grade appealed and is refunded if the appeal is decided in favour of the student.

Letter of Permission Fee

A fee of $73.50 (subject to change) is charged per Letter of Permission application.

Locker Fee

Lockers may be made available to students in the building of their faculty or school (usually from their student council or association) with proof of payment of academic fees. The university reserves the right to allot one locker to more than one student. Locker fee rates are the responsibility of the student association.

Audit Courses

Graduate students auditing courses must register for the course(s) and will be charged a fee equal to one half of the fee normally associated with that course.

Extra Courses

Courses taken by graduate students in addition to those approved for their degree programs, are classified as OS (occasional) under "Course Category." For these courses, students are assessed the appropriate undergraduate fee based on teaching department for all courses taken. Fees paid for such courses are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Independent Study courses are covered by the Graduate Program Fees if they are approved as part of the student's current program.

Occasional Students

All occasional students are assessed the appropriate Undergraduate fees based on teaching department for all courses taken.

Fees paid by a student while registered as an occasional student are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Technology Services Fee

These fees are assessed at the following rates to cover costs associated with the use of technology in the teaching and learning environment.

Undergraduate students and graduate students in a course based program will be assessed a fee of $6.51 per credit hour, assessed on a maximum of 15 credit hours.
Undergraduate students paying a program fee will be assessed a flat fee of $97.73 per term to a maximum of $195.46 per Fall/Winter Session.
Full-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $97.73 per term to a maximum of $195.46 per Fall/Winter Session.
Part-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $48.86 per term to a maximum of $97.73 per Fall/Winter Session.

Laboratory Fees

The University of Manitoba assesses an additional fee for all course sections that include a laboratory component, based on the type of lab used; these fees are refundable only until the revision deadline for the applicable course.

Manitoba International Health Insurance Plan (MISHP)

All University of Manitoba International Students are enrolled in the Manitoba International Students Health Plan (MISHP). This plan provides primary health care benefits equivalent to Manitoba Health. Enrolment in MISHP is mandatory for international students. You may request to opt out if you are covered by Manitoba Health or if you are already covered by MISHP through another Manitoba institution. Opt outs are managed by the administrator: visit mishp.ca/contact-us.

Education Practicum and Field Experience Fee

A fee of $163.74 per 3 credit hours is assessed for all education practicum and field work, field experience or field placement courses.

Fine Arts Studio Enhancement & Technology Fee

All School of Art students will be assessed $50.75 in each of the Fall and Winter terms ($25.37 in Summer Term).

This fee will be used to cover the cost of new capital equipment for the School of Art studios in order to support the curriculum. The fee collected will enable the school to ensure all equipment is current and functioning.

Law Clinical/Exam Fee

All full and half-time Law students will be assessed $114.00 in Fall Term.

Pharmacy Field Work and Course Fee

Clinical fieldwork fee (BSc. Pharm): All Bachelor of Science Pharmacy students will be assessed the Clinical fieldwork fee ($3,164.75) at the rate of $1,582.37 per fall and winter term.

Clinical fieldwork Fee (Pharm.D.):
All Doctorate of Pharmacy students will be assessed the Clinical field work fee $3,600.00 at the rate of $1,800.00 per fall and winter term

Year 3 Course Fee (BSc. Pharm): All Year 3 students will be assessed a Course fee when registering for PHRM 3110; for the current fee rate, please see the comments for this course in the Class Schedule.

St. John's College or St. Paul's College Membership Fee

St. John's College membership fee:

Field Work Fees

Field Work Fees cover expenses for student activity that takes place outside university facilities that are paid by the teaching department on behalf of students. Field Work fees may cover accommodations, transportation, meals and/or group admissions.

These fees are compulsory for all students enrolled in the courses to which they are applied and are normally non-refundable after registration. As the university teaching department may have paid out expenses on behalf of registered students, once you register for a class with a Field Work fee you are normally responsible for the fee even if you drop the class before it begins.

Students intending to drop a course with a Field Work fee prior to the start of a class must consult the teaching department to determine if they may be eligible for a refund of Field Work fees.

Courses with Field Work fees are noted in Class Schedule comments. To determine the amount of fees associated with a course, first view the course in the Class Schedule. If a comment indicates a Field Work fee will be assessed, click on the course number and title to view class details. Field Work fees will be classified as ‘Base Fees’. Field Work fees are assessed in addition to course tuition fees.

Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation in the Community Certificate Program (SPARC) Fees: 2018-2019

The SPARC program is delivered through the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management and is a certificate program consisting of a combination of non-degree and undergraduate level courses. The non-degree level courses are assessed a flat fee each per course and the undergraduate level courses are assessed at the faculty’s approved per credit hour tuition rate.

Examination Fees

A supplemental examination fee of $85.00 per exam paper (subject to change) is assessed when a student is granted the privilege of writing a Supplemental Examination; this excludes approved deferred exams.

An off-campus examination fee of $85.00 per exam paper (subject to change; plus invigilation and courier costs) is assessed when an application is made to write at a location which differs from the official university/departmental exam schedule; this excludes exams for Distance & Online Education courses.

Final Grade Appeal Fee

A fee of $50 (subject to change) is charged per final grade appealed and is refunded if the appeal is decided in favour of the student.

Letter of Permission Fee

A fee of $73.50 (subject to change) is charged per Letter of Permission application.

Locker Fee

Lockers may be made available to students in the building of their faculty or school (usually from their student council or association) with proof of payment of academic fees. The university reserves the right to allot one locker to more than one student. Locker fee rates are the responsibility of the student association.

Audit Courses

Graduate students auditing courses must register for the course(s) and will be charged a fee equal to one half of the fee normally associated with that course.

Extra Courses

Courses taken by graduate students in addition to those approved for their degree programs, are classified as OS (occasional) under "Course Category." For these courses, students are assessed the appropriate undergraduate fee based on teaching department for all courses taken. Fees paid for such courses are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Independent Study courses are covered by the Graduate Program Fees if they are approved as part of the student's current program.

Occasional Students

All occasional students are assessed the appropriate Undergraduate fees based on teaching department for all courses taken.

Fees paid by a student while registered as an occasional student are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Technology Services Fee

These fees are assessed at the following rates to cover costs associated with the use of technology in the teaching and learning environment.

  • Undergraduate students and graduate students in a course based program will be assessed a fee of $6.28 per credit hour, assessed on a maximum of 15 credit hours.
  • Undergraduate students paying a program fee will be assessed a flat fee of $94.20 per term to a maximum of $188.40 per Fall/Winter Session.
  • Full-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $94.20 per term to a maximum of $188.40 per Fall/Winter Session.
  • Part-time graduate students paying a program or continuing fee will be assessed a flat fee of $47.10 per term to a maximum of $94.20 per Fall/Winter Session.

Laboratory Fees

The University of Manitoba assesses an additional fee for all course sections that include a laboratory component, based on the type of lab used; these fees are refundable only until the revision deadline for the applicable course.

Sport and Recreation Fee

This fee supports the University of Manitoba's commitment to active living, sports and recreation. The Sport and Recreation Fee will be assessed to all University of Manitoba students, excluding those with existing agreements precluding the payment of service fees to the U of M.

Education Practicum and Field Experience Fees

A fee of $157.84 per 3 credit hours is assessed for all education practicum and field work, field experience or field placement courses.

Fine Arts Studio Enhancement & Technology Fee

All School of Art students will be assessed $50 in each of the Fall and Winter terms ($25 in Summer Term).

This fee will be used to cover the cost of new capital equipment for the School of Art studios in order to support the curriculum. The fee collected will enable the school to ensure all equipment is current and functioning.

Law Clinical/Exam Fee

All full and half-time Law students will be assessed $94.34 in Fall Term.

Pharmacy Field Work and Field Trip Fees

Clinical fieldwork fee: All Pharmacy students will be assessed the Clinical fieldwork fee ($3,117.99) at the rate of $1,558.99 per fall and winter term.

Year 3 field trip fee: All Year 3 students will be assessed a Field Trip fee when registering for PHRM 3110; for the current fee rate, please see the comments for this course in the Class Schedule.

St. John's College or St. Paul's College Membership Fee

All full-time undergraduate and graduate students who are assessed Student Organization Fees are enrolled in the UMSU Health and Dental Plan and are automatically assessed a fee for this insurance on their tuition statements. Students registered in as few as six credit hours of main campus courses in Fall Term are also eligible for coverage and are automatically enrolled in the plan.

Students who are already covered under an extended health plan and/or a dental plan, as well as students with fewer than 9 credit hours in Fall Term, may choose to opt out of the UMSU plan. Application to opt out must be made in writing.

Certification of Oral Proficiency

A Certificate of Oral Proficiency is awarded for demonstrated proficiency in a language other than English. The test is offered to anyone wishing to have their oral ability in a second language appraised. Cost: $55.
The tests are conducted through the various language departments of the University of Manitoba and consist of language comprehension and conversation. A certificate is awarded only to those who are successful in the test. Grades of either A or B are given. Tests are offered by the following departments: French and Spanish, German and Slavic Studies, Icelandic, Native Studies, Near Eastern and Judaic Studies. Application should be made through the Registrar's Office, 400 University Centre.

Examination Fees

A special exam is any exam for which application is made to write at place which differs from the official university/departmental exam timetable.
Special examination fee: $60 per exam paper; plus invigilation and courier costs

Supplemental examination fees are assessed when student is granted the privilege of writing a Supplemental Examination. It does not include approved deferred exams.
Supplemental examination fee: $75 per exam paper

Examination Invigilation fees are assessed when the Registrar’s Office facilitates and supervises the writing of an examination administered by another institution.

Grade Appeal Fee

A fee is charged per examination grade appealed and is refunded if appeal is decided in favour of the student.

Fee Per Grade Appeal: $35

Letter of Permission Fee: $52.50 per application

Locker Fee

Lockers may be made available to students in the building of their faculty or school (usually from their student council or association) with a fee receipt from Financial Services to certify payment of academic fees. The university reserves the right to allot one locker to more than one student. Locker fee rates are the responsibility of the student association.

Physical Education Facility Use Pass

The Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation Studies charges a fee for a pass to its facilities. Please consult our web site at: umanitoba.ca/rec_services, for rates, schedules, and other information pertinent to facility use. Information is also available from the Equipment Desk, Frank Kennedy Physical Education Centre. Students must present their Student Photo ID card when purchasing this pass.

Audit Courses

Graduate students auditing courses must register for the course(s) and will be charged a fee equal to one half of the fee normally associated with that course.

Distance Education Courses

Independent Study courses are covered by the Graduate Program Fees if they are approved as part of the student's current program.

Extra Courses

Courses taken by graduate students in addition to those approved for their degree programs, are classified as OS (occasional) under "Course Category." For these courses, students are assessed the appropriate undergraduate fee based on teaching department for all courses taken. Fees paid for such courses are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

Occasional Students

All occasional students are assessed the appropriate Undergraduate fees based on teaching department for all courses taken.

Fees paid by a student while registered as an occasional student are not transferable to a degree program at a later date.

2008-2009

Tuition, Endowment and Student Organization Fees

Unless otherwise noted, fees are charged based on the per credit hour rate for the faculty or school offering the course. This ensures that all students pay the same fee for the same course, regardless of home faculty.
The Manitoba government 10% fee rebate will be applied to tuition and endowment fees when they are assessed. For example, the posted tuition rate for a course offered by the Faculty of Arts is $100.00 per credit hour. Students will be assessed this amount, less 10% (or $90 per credit hour). Endowment fees for Science students are $5.00 per credit hour. Science students will be assessed this amount less 10% (or $4.50 per credit hour).

International undergraduate students will be assessed a differential tuition surcharge of 180% of the tuition rates posted below.
