Human research ethics and access applications

Submission process

All requests to access College of Nursing students, faculty, and/or staff as participants in a research or quality assurance/improvement project must be submitted through the MCNHR service request form.

This policy ensures the protection of privacy and confidentiality of personal information of College of Nursing students, faculty, and staff, and ensures that all projects are conducted ethically. All applications will be adjudicated by the College of Nursing’s leadership team.

Guidelines

1. Begin project discussions early

  • Initiate discussions with the associate dean of research early in the process to plan your request for access. It is recommended to start these discussions before submitting your proposal for ethical review.

2. Human ethics committee approval

  • Any person or group wishing to conduct research involving UM students, faculty, or staff must first submit a proposal to the human ethics committee for approval.

3. Submit access request

  • After receiving ethics committee approval, submit an access request along with a copy of your approved human ethics committee protocol and approval certificate.

4. Confidential information

5. Coordination of research materials

  • The College of Nursing will not provide names and contact information directly to researchers. Administration of letters of invitation, consent forms, and data collection will be coordinated by the MCNHR. Note that researchers are expected to cover any costs incurred in conducting the research. Contact the MCNHR for current rates.

Ethical approval requirements

All research conducted at or under the auspices of the University of Manitoba must receive approval from a UM human research ethics board.

College of Nursing principal investigators must seek approval from REB1 through the online Research Administration System.

Information on how to complete and submit an ethics application is available in your UMLearn account.

For more information, email ras_support@umanitoba.ca and review UM's human research ethics page.

Support

An MCNHR staff member is available to help you with any questions about research ethics applications. They can also review your application before you submit it to the board to ensure it is complete and meets approval requirements.

To request a review of your ethics application, please use the MCNHR service request form.
