Micro-credential in Leadership

Expected duration: 2 years maximum

To earn their credential, students must complete 3 required courses, combined with an additional 3-4 credit hours of elective courses for a total of 10-11 credit hours. They must also complete 30 hours of leadership work outside of their coursework.

  • LEAD 2010: Learning to Lead (3 credit hours) or ARTS 1160: Leadership: An Interdisciplinary Approach (3 credit hours)

  • LEAD 3010: Negotiation and Conflict Management (3 credit hours) or GMGT 2070: Introduction to Organizational Behaviour (3 credit hours)

  • LEAD 1010: Reflective Practice for Leadership (1 credit hour)

Students must choose their choice of 3-4 credit hours from the following list. Please note some courses require pre-requisites; students should ensure all requirements are met when selecting electives.

Experiential learning

Students must complete 30 hours of leadership work while enrolled in the micro-diploma. This can be completed through a volunteer role in any kind of student or community association, athletic or recreational organization, or social impact venture. It can also be in the student’s workplace. In either case, the work must involve a leadership component beyond routine tasks, spearheading an initiative or project that engages other stakeholders in pursuit of a collective goal.

All course requirements for the credential must be completed at the University of Manitoba. External transfer credit will not be considered.

Maximum time to completion

The maximum time to complete the Micro-Diploma in Leadership (Leadership in Action) shall be no greater than six academic terms (two years), subject to course availability and approval from the Department of Business Administration who will consider written requests for extension of time to complete on a case-by-case basis.

    Asper student

    If you are a current UM student, the Micro-Diploma in Leadership can be added onto your current studies, as part of your degree. It's also a great way to boost your resume with hands-on leadership skills and knowledge. University of Manitoba students can apply using Direct or Advanced Entry.

Admission requirements

Entrance requirements are determined based on the level of education the applicant has completed. Applicants must meet one of the two entrance routes: Direct Entry or Advanced Entry.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.  

In addition to the requirements listed below, all applicants must meet the English language proficiency requirements.
 

International students not residing in Canada should consult with Immigration regarding study permit criteria prior to applying.

Direct Entry

Direct entry applicants are those with fewer than 24 credit hours of post-secondary course work completed. 

Applicants with fewer than 24 credit hours of Post-Secondary course work completed, seeking admission to the micro-diploma in Leadership (Leadership in Action) must have graduated from high school with at least 5 full credits at the Grade 12 level in courses designated S, G, U or C and must have achieved a minimum average of 70% over the following, with no less than 60% in each of:

  • English 40S
  • Mathematics 40S
  • Two academic 40S courses

Advanced Entry

Advanced entry applicants are students with 24 or more credit hours of post-secondary course work completed.

Students with 24 or more credit hours of Post-Secondary course work completed seeking admission to the micro-diploma in Leadership (Leadership in Action) must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours of coursework at a recognized college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 (C) or better.

The online application includes several parts, and you may be required to submit proof of age, proof of English Language proficiency and other documents.
