Katelyn’s Masters project update!

This year, 2020, has made some waves in the world and my studies. In Mid-March, I began preparing for my second field season of my Master’s project until all fieldwork got cancelled due to the pandemic outbreak.
A day in the field: sampling the SmartPark retention ponds

For the 2020 field season, CEOS research associate and drone technician Madison Harasyn and I are sampling two distinct stormwater retention ponds at the University of Manitoba SmartPark once a week.

My name is Casey Clair. I am a fourth year student in the Faculty of Earth, Environment, and Resources here at the University of Manitoba. Some of you may remember last year’s blog post about Katelyn’s and my time around Waterhen, Manitoba.

For me, working at CEOS is/has been an incredible opportunity to work in a field relatable to my studies. I’ve learned a lot since being here and I cannot wait to further apply this knowledge in the future.
My first field experience

On May 9th, 2019, I went out to the field to assist M.Sc. student Katelyn Rogers in collecting samples and checking on her sites at WaterHen.

It’s 5 a.m. My cabinmate and the science coordinator, Morgan, gets up and leaves. She’ll figure out the plan for the day based on the weather with the captain of the MV Namao, Walter and then have breakfast.

A Winter Oceanography Project in Collaboration with the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, Eastern James Bay. It's finally winter here in southeast Hudson Bay/James Bay and the ice is thick enough to travel along the coast, so it was high time to get out of the office and into the field!
