Membership at Joe Doupe

In compliance with Manitoba Public Health restrictions, all UM Recreation Services facilities will be closed effective end-of-day Saturday, May 8, until May 30. All memberships will be extended by the equivalent of the duration of the closure. We will continue to produce virtual content to help our community stay active during this time.

Booking your workout

Current members:

Welcome back! When we closed our doors on November 11, we froze your Recreation Services membership. Upon opening on February 16, we will automatically add the number of days closed from November 11, 2020, to the original end date of your membership. No action needs to be taken on your part to begin booking your workouts.

Your payment plan will begin again if you were paying your membership on a monthly payment or a payroll deduction plan.

All members:

- Workouts are offered in 90-minute workout blocks on a first-come, first-served basis.

- Time slots can be booked no more than two days in advance and open at 7 a.m.


 

Our commitment to your safety

The health and safety of our members and staff is our top priority.

Please note the following to a safe visit for everyone:

  • Please stay home if you are feeling unwell. Before entering the facility, staff and participants must use the self-screening tool. Members and staff are not allowed entry if they present with COVID-19 symptoms. 
     
  • Mandatory mask use. The wearing of 3-ply disposable or reusable masks is now mandatory on UM campuses even when physical distancing is possible and must be worn at all times, including being actively engaged in strenuous exercise.
     
  • Limited capacity. As per Public Health guidelines, we will be limiting occupancy to  25 percent of the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre’s capacity.  
     
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting. Time has been allocated between each block for thorough facility cleaning and sanitization using hospital-grade products. Also, members are asked to clean equipment before and after each use.
     
  • Signage. Signage highlighting expectations to ensure everyone complies with our safety protocols will be located throughout the facilities. 

Changes to services

 

  • Lockers and change rooms: Locker rooms will now be open and following physical distancing guidelines. Please keep in mind only a select number of lockers will be available for use.
     
  • Showers: Every second shower will be available for member use effective Monday, April 9. Please bring your own towel. 
     
  • Washrooms: Washrooms will remain open for use.
     
  • Towel service will not be offered. If you have purchased towel service, a pro-rated credit will be automatically placed on your account. 
     
  • The gymnasium is now open at a limited capacity. 
     
  • Water fountains will be available to fill personal water bottles only. Drinking directly from water fountains is not permitted. 
    • Please bring your own water bottles or sports drinks.

Hours of operation and parking

Opening hours:

Monday to Friday 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Parking:

On weekdays, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., paid visitor parking is restricted to meters and Park & Pay areas. Visitor parking passes for specific lots must be displayed in vehicle. For complete parking details including daytime rates and maximums, please visit UM short-term parking.

For your convenience, we recommend parking on the street. 

What to expect when you arrive at Joe Doupe

  • Access to Joe Doupe Recreation Centre:

    You will gain access to Brodie Center through the main doors and will be required to have an access card, photo ID and be wearing a mask.
           -  Members who are not UM staff or students will require an access card to enter the Brodie Centre. Email Kerri Chase to arrange your card: kerri.chase@umanitoba.ca
           -  Fort Garry UM staff and students who use the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre should contact Colin Wooton: colin.wooton@umanitoba.ca to have access added to their card.

    •  Just prior to your designated workout time, line up down the hall outside the Joe Doupe Centre entrance. Physical distance markers will be present.
       
    • Just prior to your time, the exterior Joe Doupe Centre door will be open. You will proceed to the turnstile, swipe in and then you will be  able to remove your mask.
       
    • You will then have access throughout the Joe Doupe Centre

UM faculty/staff, alumni and community memberships 

I was in the middle of my membership contract. What are my options for my membership?

When we closed our doors on November 11, your Recreation Services membership was frozen and upon opening on February 16 will automatically add the number of days closed from November 11, 2020 onto the original end date of your membership. No action needs to be taken on your part to begin booking your workouts.

If you are unable to complete the waiver online, please call our customer service team at 204-789-3858.

If you did not reactivate your membership in 2020, you will have the option to buy a new membership.

I have a membership at Joe Doupe Recreation Centre on the Bannatyne Campus? What are my options for my membership?

Joe Doupe Center Only members will have access to the Joe Doupe Centre.

Those that have purchased a membership for both campuses will have access to both the Active Living Centre (Fort Garry campus) and Joe Doupe Centre (Bannatyne campus).

Can I freeze my membership? (i.e. I am a UM staff member and campus remains closed).

We understand you may not be ready to reactivate your membership. If you do not complete the waiver to reactivate your membership, we will automatically apply a prorated credit to your account for membership, locker and towel service (if applicable) for future use. When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options. 

If you are paying your membership on payroll deduction or through a payment plan and had previously activated your membership, your membership will be active automatically.

If you had not previously activated your membership, when you are ready to come back, we will not restart deductions until you complete the waiver to reactivate your membership.  When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options. 

Is my membership being reactivated automatically or do I have to call in?

Memberships are not being reactivated automatically.  

Please watch your email for instructions on how to reactive you membership, which includes completing an online waiver.  Once your waiver is complete and membership reactivated, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to book your workout time slot or sign up for a group fitness class online.  

If you are unable to complete the waiver online, please call our Customer Service team at 204-789-3858.

We understand you may not be ready to reactivate your membership. If you do not complete the waiver to reactivate your membership, we automatically applied a prorated credit to your account for membership, locker and towel service (if applicable) for future use.  When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options. 

The amount of time memberships will be extended will be based on the number of days we were closed and the amount of time you had left on your membership.

Can I have a refund on my membership?

If you do not want to reactivate your membership at this time, a prorated credit will automatically be applied to your account for future use. 

If you are not offering towel service, can I have a refund?

At this time, the Joe Doupe Centre continues to do its part to stop the spread of COVID-19. Towel service will be suspended until further notice and a prorated credit will be applied to your account for future use. 


Booking and planning your workout or activity

Why do I have to pre-book my workout or activity?

As we are operating at a reduced capacity, you must pre-book workout and activity times. By pre-booking your time, you are guaranteed entry into the facility during that time slot.

Time slots are 90 minutes long. 

The Joe Doupe Rec Centre exterior doors will be open 5 minutes before each workout/activity start-time and remain open for 15 minutes.

We ask patrons to be respectful of this process and exit the building within 15 minutes of the end of the time slot.  

How many times am I allowed to book in a day?

Members are permitted to book for one 90-minute session a day.

When can I book my workout, activities and group fitness time(s)?

Time slots can be booked no more than two days in advance and open up at 7 a.m. All gym visits MUST be pre-booked.

How do I cancel my workout, activity or group fitness class time slot after I have signed-up? Will I be charged if I cancel?

You can cancel your time slot through our online registration system or by calling the customer service desk at 204-789-3858. 

At this time, there is no charge to cancel or change a time slot. We ask that you cancel at least 8 hours in advance to allow for others to book a time. Failure to do so may result in lost booking privileges.

Do I have to take the self-screening test before every workout or activity?

Yes, all staff, students and members are required to take the self-screening test before entering the facility.


Building/equipment use 

Can I use the locker rooms?

Lockers and change rooms and showers: Due to the current restrictions, lockers, change rooms and showers will remain closed at this time. Please come ready with a pair of indoor shoes for your workout.

  • If you paid for a locker rental, your locker rental fees will be prorated and applied to your account for the period of time locker rooms remain closed. 

Washrooms: Washrooms will remain open for use.

Please bring your own filled water bottle as water fountains will only be available as a fill up station. 

Do I have to take the self-screening test before entering the facility?

Yes, all staff, students and members are required to take the self-screening test before entering the facility.

Do I need to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

Mandatory mask use. The wearing of 3-ply disposable or reusable masks is now mandatory on UM campuses even when physical distancing is possible and must be worn at all times including while being actively engaged in strenuous exercise.

What if I prefer not to wear a mask or have a medical exception and I cannot wear a mask?

Masks are required within our facilities even while actively working out. If you have a medical exception that prohibits you from wearing a mask, please let our Customer Service Desk know.

What if I forgot my mask?

You must wear a 3-ply disposable or reusable mask to enter our facilities. If you forgot your mask, you may be denied entry into our facilities.

Are staff required to wear masks?

Staff will be required to wear masks as per the University of Manitoba guidelines.

Our staff will wear a mask during their shift for their safety, and the safety of others. Instructors teaching group fitness classes, will  be required to wear a mask while instructing or actively engaged in strenuous exercise. 

Can I borrow equipment? (i.e. a basketball for Open gym?)

Equipment will not be available to borrow, except for basketballs. Please bring your own racquet/paddle and ball.

You can purchase balls/shuttlecocks at the JDRC customer services desk.

Can I share equipment?

For sports with another participant (i.e. squash, racquetball, badminton and pickleball), participants must each have their own equipment and ball/shuttlecock. Equipment must be wiped down before and after being used.
