Mask Use in UM Sport & Recreation Facilities: The wearing of masks is now mandatory on UM campuses even when physical distancing is possible. Anyone entering UM Sport and Recreation Facilities is required to wear a face mask at all times including when they are actively engaged in strenuous exercise..

Please see below for additional information about our mask policy:

Am I required to wear a mask at all times?

Masks must be worn at all times while indoors, including when you are actively engaged in exercise. This includes but is not limited to:

1. When entering and exiting the building
2. When passing through turnstiles
3. In the change rooms, washrooms or the day use locker spaces
4. In the stairwells and elevators
5. In the fitness and recreational spaces when moving between workout stations 

 

Masks may be removed in the following situations:
1. While taking a sip of water.

What if I prefer not to wear a mask or have a medical exemption and I cannot wear a mask?

Masks will be required within our facilities even while actively engaged in strenuous exercise. If you have a medical exception that prohibits you from wearing a mask, please let our Customer Service Desk know.

What if I forgot my mask?

Masks will be required to enter our facilities.  If you forgot your mask, you will be denied entry into our facilities. 

Are staff required to wear masks?

Staff will be required to wear masks as per the University of Manitoba guidelines.

Our staff will wear a mask during their shift for their safety, and the safety of others. Instructors teaching group fitness classes, will be required to wear a mask while instructing or actively engaged in strenuous exercise.  

  • Please stay home if you are feeling unwell. Before entering the facility, staff and participants must use the self-screening tool. Members and staff are not allowed entry if they present with COVID-19 symptoms. 
     
  • Limited capacity. To ensure physical distancing, there will be a 45-member capacity in the weight room and 20 for group fitness at any one time. This is approximately 25 per cent of the Joe Doupe Centre’s capacity.  
     
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting. Time as been allocated between each block for thorough facility cleaning and sanitization using hospital-grade products.
     
    • Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrance, at the exit and throughout the facility.
       
    • Members will be asked to apply hand sanitizer immediately after entry and upon leaving the facilities.
       
    • Members will be asked to clean all exercise equipment thoroughly before and after each use in addition to our cleaning schedules.
       
    • For group fitness: Members will be asked to clean all exercise equipment thoroughly before and after each use in addition to our staff’s cleaning. Equipment (Matts, Bars, Weights, and Bikes etc.) will be deep cleaned after every class and more functional body weight classes will be provided. 
       
  • Signage. Signage highlighting expectations to ensure everyone is in compliance with our safety protocols will be located throughout the facilities. Floor spacing will be marked inside and outside the Joe Doupe Centre.

Changes to services

In addition to changes around booking workout times and group fitness classes, please note that some services will not be available at this time:

  • Towel service will not be offered. If you have purchased towel service, a pro-rated credit will be automatically placed on your account. 
  • If you have a locker rented, it will automatically be re-activated if your membership is re-activated. 
  • The gymnasium will remain closed.
  • Intramurals will be suspended until further notice.
  • Facility rentals are not available until further notice.
  • Water fountains will available to fill personal water bottles only. Drinking directly from water fountains is not permitted. 
    • Please bring your own water bottles or sports drinks.

Our Sport and Recreation Facilities are temporarily closed.

Parking:

On weekdays, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., paid visitor parking is restricted to meters and Park & Pay areas. Visitor parking passes for specific lots must be displayed in vehicle. For complete parking details including daytime rates and maximums, please visit UM short-term parking.

For your convenience, we recommend parking on the street. 

What to expect when you arrive at Joe Doupe

Our Sport and Recreation facilities are temporarily closed. This information will apply once we are able to re-open. Please check back for updates.

  • Access to Joe Doupe Recreation Centre:

    You will gain access to Brodie Center through the main doors and will be required to have an access card, photo ID and be wearing a mask.
           -  Members who are not UM staff or students will require an access card to enter the Brodie Centre. Email Kerri Chase to arrange your card: kerri.chase@umanitoba.ca
           -  Fort Garry UM staff and students who use the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre should contact Colin Wooton: colin.wooton@umanitoba.ca to have access added to their card.

    •  Just prior to your designated workout time, line up down the hall outside the Joe Doupe Centre entrance. Physical distance markers will be present.
       
    • Just prior to your time, the exterior Joe Doupe Centre door will be open. You will proceed to the turnstile, swipe in and then you will be  able to remove your mask.
       
    • You will then have access throughout the Joe Doupe Centre

What to expect for your workout:

  • Day Use Lockers: will be limited to every second one open for more space. Rented lockers will be available as usual.
  • Restrooms and showers: The restrooms will be available in the lockers but the showers will not be available for use at this time. 
  • Machines and equipment: Every other cardio machine and bench will be unavailable, and other equipment will be spaced out wherever possible.
  • Equipment Use: We are selecting and limiting the available equipment for use. Some harder to clean items will be removed from the floor (e.g. bands, bosus, foam rollers).

At the end of your workout:

    • 15 minutes prior to your 90 minute workout block ending, an announcement will be made for members to finish-up and start cleaning their spaces. Thorough cleaning by our staff will take place in-between workout blocks. 

Group Fitness

    • Reduced class schedule and sizes will be implemented in order to maintain physical distancing and thorough time to clean between classes.
    • Please bring your own yoga mat for yoga classes and a water bottle.

For Group Fitness: Entry to the Joe Doupe Centre is the same as for a workout block. Be sure to arrive no later than 5 minutes before your scheduled class as the exterior Joe Doupe Centre doors may be locked with less than 5 minutes before the start of the class.

UM faculty/staff, alumni and community memberships 

I was in the middle of my membership contract. What are my options for my membership?

You have the option to reactivate your membership. Please watch your email for instructions on how to reactivate you membership, which includes completing an online waiver.  Once your waiver is complete and membership reactivated, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to book your workout time slot or sign up for a group fitness class online.

If you are unable to complete the waiver online, please call our customer service team at 204-789-3858.

We understand you may not be ready to reactivate your membership. If you do not complete the waiver to reactivate your membership, we will automatically apply a prorated credit to your account for membership, locker and towel service (if applicable) for future use.  When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options. 

I have a membership at Joe Doupe Recreation Centre on the Bannatyne Campus? What are my options for my membership?

Joe Doupe Center Only members will have access to the Joe Doupe Centre. Those that have purchased a membership for both campuses will have access to both the Active Living and Joe Doupe Centre after reactivating their membership by completing the waiver form.  

If you do not want to reactivate your membership to access the Joe Doupe Centre, that’s no problem.  We will continue to pause your Joe Doupe membership until that facility re-opens.

Can I freeze my membership? (i.e. I am a UM staff member and campus remains closed).

We understand you may not be ready to reactivate your membership. If you do not complete the waiver to reactivate your membership, we will automatically apply a prorated credit to your account for membership, locker and towel service (if applicable) for future use. When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options. 

If you are UM staff, paying your membership on payroll deduction, we will not restart deductions until you complete the waiver to reactivate your membership.  When you are ready to come back, please connect with us to discuss membership options. 

Is my membership being reactivated automatically or do I have to call in?

Memberships are not being reactivated automatically.  

Please watch your email for instructions on how to reactive you membership, which includes completing an online waiver.  Once your waiver is complete and membership reactivated, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to book your workout time slot or sign up for a group fitness class online.

Can I have a refund on my membership?

If you do not want to reactivate your membership at this time, a prorated credit will automatically be applied to your account for future use. 

If you are not offering towel service, can I have a refund?

At this time, the Joe Doupe Centre continues to do its part to stop the spread of Covid-19. Towel service will be suspended until further notice and a prorated credit will be applied to your account for future use. 


Booking and planning your workout

Why do I have to pre-book my workout time?

As we are operating at a reduced capacity, all workout times must be pre-booked. By pre-booking your workout time, or your group fitness class, you are guaranteed entry into the facility during that time slot.

Workout time slots are 90 minutes long.

Group fitness classes range from 45 minutes to an hour long.  

The Joe Doupe Centre exterior doors will be open 5 minutes prior to each workout start-time and will remain open for 15 minutes after the start of the workout time slot.  

We ask patrons to be respectful of this process and exit the building within 15 minutes of the end of the workout time slot.  

How many times am I allowed to workout in a day?

Members are permitted to workout for one 90-minute session a day or two group fitness class.

When can I book my workout and group fitness time(s)?

Time slots can be booked no more than two days in advance and open up at 7 a.m. All gym visits MUST be pre-booked, at this time, drop-ins will not be permitted.

How do I cancel my workout time slot or group fitness classes after I have signed-up? Will I be charged for classes I cancel?

You can cancel your workout time slot or group fitness class through our online registration system or by calling the customer service desk at 204-789-3858. 

At this time, there is no charge to cancel or change a workout time slot or group fitness class. We ask that you cancel at least 8 hours in advance to allow for others to book a time. Failure to do so may result in lost booking privileges.

Do I have to take the self-screening test before every workout?

Yes, all staff, students and members are required to take the self-screening test before entering the facility.


Building/equipment use 

Can I use the locker rooms?

The locker room is open for member use. Day use lockers are at 50% capacity to maintain physical distancing. We ask that you come dressed to work out.

Restrooms are open but showers are currently closed. 

Please bring your own filled water bottle as water fountains will only be available as a fill up station. 

Do I have to take the self-screening test before entering the facility?

Yes, all staff, students and members are required to take the self-screening test before entering the facility.

Do I need to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

Effective immediately: All UM faculty, staff and students—as well as visitors, contractors and vendors— will be required to wear a face mask in all indoor common or shared spaces at all UM campuses. In addition, masks are also required where social distancing cannot be maintained in any campus setting. 
In the Active Living Centre and the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre, masks may be removed while exercising, as long as physical distancing is maintained.

Physical distancing, Hand washing and Hand sanitizer will be required. Follow the signs in the building.

Members are required to wear a mask even while actively working out and in accordance with local restrictions. This includes upon entering and exiting the facility.  While working out, if 6 ft of physical distancing cannot occur, masks will be required (e.g. spotting), and in accordance with local restrictions.

At this time our gymnasiums are not open and equipment will not be available to sign out.

Can I share equipment?

Equipment must be wiped down before and after individual use. As such, sharing equipment between sets is discouraged. Please follow the signs in the building on equipment use and cleaning.
