Entrance Students

For students who will begin their first-year of university in the fall, and will enrol as full-time students and St John’s College members. Entrance students may also be eligible for other awards with a July 31 deadline.

Arthur Uniacke Chipman Entrance Scholarship

Arthur Uniacke Chipman Entrance Scholarship
To be awarded to the student entering first-year university as a full-time student and member of St John’s College who:

  • Best combines academic achievement and leadership ability
  • Has a minimum average of 80 per cent in the final year of high school

Where applicants are of roughly equal standing on these criteria, preference will be given first to students who are registered with mature-student status and second to those with significant financial need.
 

Henry Irvine Graham Entrance Scholarship

Henry Irvine Graham Entrance Scholarship  (Funds for this award are shared with the H. Irvine Graham Undergraduate Scholarship)
Criteria:

  • The major criterion will be a demonstration of how the applicant is “well-rounded” and has overcome difficulties in order to realize their full potential
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Must be entering the first year of studies at the UM with a minimum of 18 credit hours
  • Register as a member of St John’s College
  • Have demonstrated exceptional academic promise, diversity of interests, potential for leadership and community service

this scholarship may not be held concurrently with other scholarships totalling more than $500
 

Laurence Frank Wilmot Entrance Scholarship

Laurence Frank Wilmot Entrance Scholarship
Criteria:

  • To be awarded to a student entering first year at the U of M and who is a member of St John’s College.
  • The recipient shall be registered in a full-time undergraduate program.
  • Awarded for proven leadership abilities and demonstrated interest in (a) community and/or the welfare of fellow students, (b) athletics, and/or (c) other activities.

Scholastic ability and academic potential shall be considered however, the award will not necessarily go to the candidate with the highest grades.

General Scholarships and Bursaries

These scholarships and bursaries are for St John’s College students in any year of study.

Beverley and Bishop Allan Bursary

Beverley and Bishop Allan Bursary

Criteria:

  • Awarded to an undergraduate St John’s College member who has completed at least one year at the UM as a full-time student, ending with no less than a cumulative 2.8 GPA
  • Is registered as a full-time student with a minimum 18 credit hours
  • Must demonstrate financial need

Preference will be given to a student who currently resides in Manitoba and has done so for the past five years. Each recipient will receive the award for two years. The above criteria must be fulfilled in the second year
 

Willard J. Condo & Walter Barfoot Memorial Bursary - Religion

Willard J. Condo & Walter Barfoot Memorial Bursary 

Criteria:

  • Open to St John’s College members majoring in Religion or in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • A commitment to and capacity for ministry shall be considered
  • Applicants must provide two letters in support of their community involvement

Preference will be given to students in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College
 

James F. Blewett Memorial Bursary

James F. Blewett Memorial Bursary 

Criteria:

  • For a St John’s College member and full-time student in any year of studies
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Have demonstrated ongoing humanitarian qualities (for example, through volunteer work or community service), and a commitment to academics and their school communities

Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in Education or who are majoring in Human Resources Management in the Asper School of Business

The George Thomas Chapman Memorial Bursary 

Criteria:

  • Must be a member of St John’s College
  • Have a demonstrated significant financial need
  • Open to UM undergraduate and graduate students
  • Open to full and part-time students
  • Continue as a member of the College in the fall

 

Children-of-Clergy Bursaries

† Children-of-Clergy Bursaries: several awards, total available 

Criteria:

  • Awarded to St John’s College members with a parent who is a clergy member of the Anglican Church of Canada
  • Students entering their first or subsequent year of studies at the UM or in the St John’s College Faculty of Theology in the fall are eligible for these bursaries
  • The bursaries will be awarded at the discretion of the Bishop of Rupert’s Land

Criteria:
St John’s College members enrolled at the UM or in the College’s Faculty of Theology may apply
The recipient shall be registered in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program
First-year students are eligible to apply
Demonstrated financial need
Community involvement and leadership potential may be considered

Preference will be given to a student who is of Canadian Indigenous ancestry, self-declared (Inuit, Métis, Status or Non-Status)
 

Donnie Eastwood Memorial Bursary

Donnie Eastwood Memorial Bursary 

Criteria:

  • Members registered in full-time studies (minimum 18 credit hours) at either the UM or the College’s Faculty of Theology may apply
  • Cumulative average of at least a B (3.00 GPA) is required, or, for first-year students, a high school average of no less than 80 per cent in the final year of high school
  • Demonstrated financial need

Demonstrated capacity and desire to help others shall be considered

William E. Harrison Bursary

Criteria:

  • For a full-time student in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College applicants must have good academic standing, students must provide a letter from the Dean of Theology attesting to this.
  • However, if no suitable Theology student applies applications from U of M students registered as St John’s College members will be considered
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, and students entering their first year at UM must have a minimum average of 80 per cent in the final year of high school
  • Applicants must provide two letters in support of their community involvement
  • Must demonstrate financial need

Capacity and desire to help others shall be considered

Terry McDowall Bursary

Criteria:

  • Is registered in a Humanities programme at the UM
  • Continue as a member of the College in the Fall
  • Demonstrate significant financial need
  • Open to undergraduate and graduate students

Preference will be given to a student who is a self-declared Canadian Indigenous (Inuit, Métis, Status or non-Status)
 

Morgan Scholarship - Rural Manitoba Residents

Morgan Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Must have a permanent residence in rural Manitoba
  • That is, a residence outside Winnipeg and the RMs of Cartier, East St Paul, Headingly, Macdonald, Ritchot, Rockwood, Rosser, Springfield, St Andrews, St Clements, St François-Xavier, Taché, West St Paul
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student with a cumulative average of at least a B (3.00 GPA) or, for first-year students, an average of no less than 80 per cent in the final year of high school
  • Must register in full-time studies and as a St John’s College member at the UM in September of the current year
  • Must provide three letters of support indicating a demonstrated record of outstanding contributions and commitment to the community

Jack and Eva Rogers Memorial Trust Fund - Religion

Jack and Eva Rogers Memorial Trust Fund 

Criteria:

  • Open to students entering or continuing in full/part-time studies who have declared Religion as a major at the University of Manitoba or open to students entering or continuing in full/part-time studies in the Faculty of Theology at St John’s College
  • Demonstrate significant financial need
  • Must continue as a member of the College in the fall

St Luke’s Award

St Luke’s Award 

Criteria:

  • Entering or continuing full-time studies either in an undergraduate program of UM, or in the College’s Faculty of Theology
  • Must be registered as a St John’s College member
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 required for returning students
  • Preference will be given to a “recognized participant” in St Luke’s Anglican Church in Winnipeg
  • Demonstrated involvement in community and public service
  • Financial need will be considered

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee of the Parish of St Luke

Senior Students

For students completing their second or later year of study. Open to undergraduate and graduate students. Senior students may be eligible for awards listed under General, Graduate Students, Dentistry, Law, and Medicine, Residence Students and Prizes.

Criteria:

  • Enrolled in the Faculty of Science
  • Completed 30 credit hours at the U of M
  • Minimum GPA of 3.75
  • Registered as a member of St John’s College
  • Demonstrate financial need

 

C.A.E. Jensen Scholarship

C.A.E. Jensen Scholarship 

Criteria:

  • Entering third year or later
  • Awarded to a full-time St John’s College member in full-time studies at the University of Manitoba
  • Demonstrated academic excellence; with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50
  • Substantial non-scholastic interest such as athletics, music, student government, etc.

 

The Lajos Lukács Scholarship in Pure Mathematics

The Lajos Lukács Scholarship in Pure Mathematics 

Criteria:

  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.0
  • Must be a student in pure mathematics
  • Preference will be given to individuals enrolled in the following Mathematics programs in the order of priority: 1) Masters; 2) PhD; 3) Honours program; for Graduate students area of research must be topological algebra, general topology, or categorical topology; Honours students must have completed Math 3240 Topology 1 with a minimum grade of A
  • Must register as a member of St John’s College in the Fall

 

Erin Palamar Bursary in Nursing

Erin Palamar Bursary in Nursing 

Criteria:

  • Full-time student registered in the Faculty of Nursing in second year or later at the University of Manitoba
  • St John’s College member
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Financial need will be considered
  • Demonstrates involvement in College and or university life (may include participation in some or all of the following: student government, College activities, committee work, etc.)

Criteria:

  • To be awarded, based on financial need, to a student who is entering or continuing in full/part-time studies and who has declared Religion as a major at the University of Manitoba
  • The recipient must be registered as a St John’s College member

Criteria:

  • Must register as a member of St John’s College in the fall
  • Must have demonstrated significant financial need
  • Must be entering or continuing in a graduate program, with preference given to graduate students in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources

Priority will be given to single parents
 

Divay Quackenbush Award

Divay Quackenbush Award: Two awards of approximately $600 each

Criteria:

  • Must register as a member of St John’s College in the fall
  • Must be registered in full- or part-time in the Faculty of Arts, Education, and/or School of Art Programs
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Acanada
  • preference will be given to students who focus on Manitoba History from 1910 to 1930, and make use of research materials in Archives & Special Collections
  • topics like immicgration, teachin in Mennonite and rural areas, general economic & social conditions within this time frame are of special interest

Criteria:

  • Entering or continuing in a full-time program in Dentistry, Medicine, or Law
  • Must have been a full-time undergraduate student at the UM and have been a member of St John’s College
  • Demonstrate significant financial need
  • Must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.00

Preference will be given to a Dentistry student at the UM

Criteria:

  • For a St John’s College graduate entering first-year Medicine at the U of M
  • Must have demonstrated active involvement in the College

How do I become eligible?

To be eligible you must be registered as a St John’s College member by the application deadline. Graduates and students who change faculties may need to re-register as members. College membership is open to all students of the UM. 

Students can become a member by following these steps: 

  1. Go to http://www.umanitoba.ca/ and select "Aurora Student".
  2. Select "Enter Secure Area"
  3. Enter your student number and PIN
  4. Select "Login"
  5. Select "Enrolment and Academic Records"
  6. Select "Declarations"
  7. Select "Declare College Membership"
  8. Click the "Add" button to add new membership
