First-year students

These awards are for St John’s College members who are completing their first year of university. First year students may also be eligible for awards listed under General, Residence Students and Prizes.

Helen & Bill Battershill Scholarship

Up to $1900 (Funds for this award will be shared with the George W. Battershill Scholarship)

Criteria:

  • full-time undergraduate student at the University of Manitoba and member of St John’s College
  • entering second year of full-time studies in a minimum of 24 credit hours at UM in September
  • have a minimum sessional grade point average of 3.00
  • have demonstrated active participation in the College e.g. student government, athletics, intramurals, committee work, Chapel, other College activities, etc.
  • continue as a College member in the fall
  •  

Burman/Drewry Scholarship

Up to $675

Criteria:

  • to be presented to a St John’s College member completing the first year of university studies
  • for excellence in academics, leadership abilities and participation in university life, particularly in athletics
  • must re-register as a College member in September

 

Dance Bursary

Up to $750

Criteria

  • to be awarded to a St John’s College member who is completing the first year of university studies and who demonstrates financial need
  • must re-register as a College member the following academic year

These scholarships and bursaries are for St John’s College students in any year of study.

Marion Abra Memorial Bursary

Marion Abra Memorial Bursary

Criteria:

  • Awarded to recognize both scholarly accomplishment and financial need
  • Completed at least one year as a full-time student registered at St John’s College (by the end of April)
  • Achieved an overall average of B or better, and demonstrated significant financial need
  • For applicants meeting these criteria, each of the following factors will be considered an advantage, but not a requirement: mature student status, single parent status, major in a humanities subject
  • Must re-register as a College member in September

Peter Aitchison Memorial Bursary - Faculty of Science, Math Programme

Peter Aitchison Memorial Bursary

Criteria:

  • Must be enrolled as a member of St John’s College
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student, preferably a graduate, in the Faculty of Science, Math Programme.
  • Preference will be given to Graduate students pursuing an Applied Math programme. Undergraduates in third and fourth year in four-year Applied Mathematics programme
  • Science may also be considered
  • Must demonstrate a financial need
  • Must demonstrate non-scholastic interest such as community involvement, athletics, leadership, etc.

The Jocelyn & Warren Barnard Scholarship

The Jocelyn & Warren Barnard Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Must be registered as a St John’s College member
  • Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the University of Manitoba
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 Must be enrolled in the Faculty of Social Work or the Asper School of Business, majoring in accounting
  • Must show a commitment to volunteerism with their community
  • Preference will be given to someone who is active within the College community

Criteria:

  • For a St John’s College member who has demonstrated exceptional involvement in debating

Alice Cheatley Bursary

Alice Cheatley Bursary

Criteria:

  • For a St John’s College member registered in a full-time program who has done work in one or more of these areas: the United Nations, Political Studies as related to International Relations, or Canadian Studies
  • Minimum sessional GPA of 3.00 required
  • Must demonstrate significant financial need
  • Must re-register as a College member and full-time student in the fall

James Frost Cross Memorial Trophy

James Frost Cross Memorial Trophy

Criteria:

  • Presented to the student of St John’s College deemed to be the most proficient in the combined fields of academics and athletics, and to have made a significant contribution to the welfare of the College and his/her fellow students. The recipient will be selected by the St John’s College Students’ Association, subject to approval by the Scholarship Committee and the Warden

Michael and Muriel Ewanchuk Bursary

Criteria:

  • Open to SJC members who are registered in full-time studies at the graduate or undergraduate level
  • Will have demonstrated exceptional volunteer experience in the College, University and/or community
  • Has taken a leadership role in school or community volunteer activities
  • Have demonstrated a significant financial need
  • Must continue SJC membership in the fall

Janice Filmon Bursary

Janice Filmon Bursary

Criteria:

  • Open to SJC members who are registered in full-time studies at the graduate or undergraduate level
  • Will have demonstrated exceptional volunteer experience in the College, University and/or community
  • Has taken a leadership role in school or community volunteer activities
  • Have demonstrated a significant financial need
  • Must continue SJC membership in the fall

 

Henry Irvine Graham Undergraduate Scholarship

Henry Irvine Graham Undergraduate Scholarship: Up to $5175 (Funds for this award are shared with the H. Irvine Graham Entrance Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Applicant is “well-rounded” and has overcome difficulties in order to realize their full potential
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Must be entering the second year or later of undergraduate studies at UM with a minimum of 18 credit hours
  • Must be a member of St John’s College
  • Must have demonstrated exceptional academic promise, diversity of interests, potential for leadership, and community service
  • May not be held concurrently with other scholarships totalling more than $500

 

Hoskins Scholarship

Hoskins Scholarship: Up to $1250

Criteria:

  • To be awarded to a full-time St John’s College member who has completed at least first year at UM
  • Entering second year Science or later at UM
  • Will have completed courses with high standing in the following: (1) Calculus and (2) a course designated with a “w” signifying writing content
  • Must re-register as a full-time student and College member in September

 

Partners in Education Award

Partners in Education Award: Up to $500

Criteria:

  • The applicant must be enrolled as a St John’s College member in full-time studies, either at the University of Manitoba or in the St John’s College Faculty of Theology
  • Must have an average grade of at least a B (cumulative GPA of 3.00) at the end of regular session
  • Involvement in the life of St John’s College and volunteer activities in a community will be considered
  • Financial need may be considered
  • Must re-register in full-time studies and as a College member in September

Preference will normally be given to a member of a parish of the Anglican Church of Canada

 

St John’s College Students’ Association Awards

St John’s College Students’ Association Awards: Up to $2000

Criteria:

  • For St John’s College members who are registered in full-time studies at UM with a minimum term GPA of 2.00
  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated involvement in College life during the current academic year
  • Involvement in a community of faith may also be considered
  • Applicants must provide a brief essay on the topic “What St John’s College Means to Me”
  • Financial need may be considered
  • Preference may be given to students who have not previously received the award
  • Funds provided and recipients selected by the St John’s College Students’ Association

 

Alfred H. Shephard Bursary

Alfred H. Shephard Bursary: Up to $5650

Criteria:

  • Members who will have completed one year of full-time studies (minimum of 18 credit hours) at UM by May of the current year
  • Demonstrate clear financial need
  • Must be continuing in full-time studies (minimum of 18 credit hours) at the UM as a St John’s College member in September

 

John and Jilleen Stafford Bursary

John and Jilleen Stafford Bursary
Criteria:

  • Must be enrolled as a member of St John’s College
  • Be enrolled as a continuing full-time undergraduate student in the Faculty of Engineering at UM
  • Preference will be given to a student who has shown improvement in grades over the course of their university studies
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must demonstrate non-scholastic interests in community involvement (such as food banks, shelter programs), athletics, leadership, etc.

Senior Students (Year 2+)

For students completing their second or later year of study. Open to undergraduate and graduate students. Senior students may be eligible for awards listed under General, Graduate Students, Dentistry, Law, and Medicine, Residence Students and Prizes.

All Saints James Brown Bursary

All Saints James Brown Bursary: Up to $450

Criteria:

  • For a St John’s College member who has demonstrated financial need. Must have successfully completed a minimum of 60 credit hours by May of the current year. Must register for a full-time program (minimum 18 credit hours) with an emphasis on Canadian Studies at UM, as a St John’s College member, in September of the current year. Applicants must provide letters from one or more professors indicating that their studies contain a significant component pertaining to Prairie Studies
  • If a candidate fulfilling the above criteria is not found then the Bursary can be awarded to a student with a minimum of 60 credit hours in any field of study

 

George W. Battershill Scholarship - Education

George W. Battershill Scholarship: Up to $1900 (funds for this award will be shared with the Helen & Bill Battershill Scholarship).

Criteria:

  • St John's College member registered for full-time studies in Education at UM in the fall
  • Minimum Degree GPA of 3.0
  • The recipient will have participated actively in College life.
  • Preference will be given to students who hold a degree from UM and who were SJC members
  • The recipient must register as a St John’s College member in the fall

 

Canadian Shield Scholarship - subjects pertaining to the Canadian Shield, with a focus on renewable energy

Canadian Shield Scholarship: Up to $1500

Criteria:

  • Be a member of St John’s College
  • Be a Research Fellow, Graduate Student or Undergraduate Student (going into third or fourth year with a minimum course load of 18 credit hours), at the University of Manitoba
  • Register in full-time studies at the University of Manitoba in September of the current year if a Graduate or Undergraduate Student
  • Have letters of support from one or more professors indicating that the study of subjects pertaining to the Canadian Shield, with a focus on renewable energy, i.e. water, wind and sun; environmental impact studies and resource management; and related fieldwork, constitutes a significant part of the student’s studies at the University
  • Have a grade of B or better in each course relevant to the Canadian Shield in the current academic year, or latest year of study

 

Class of 63 Scholarship - Arts or Science

Class of 63 Scholarship: Up to $500

  • Have completed 90 credit hours at the University of Manitoba
  • Be enrolled in either Arts or Science
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.00
  • Must be registered as a member of St John’s College
  • Show a commitment to volunteerism within their community and have two letters of support outlining their volunteer efforts

 

Wendy Hansen Memorial Scholarship

Wendy Hansen Memorial Scholarship: Up to $1675
Criteria:

  • Candidates must be nominated by two other students
  • For a full-time student registered in second year or later at the U of M as a St John’s College members
  • Demonstrated exceptional academic involvement in College and university life, while maintaining an average grade of at least a B
  • Involvement in College and university life may include participation in some or all of the following: student government, athletics, intramurals, College activities, committee work, etc.
  • Must re-register as a College member in September

Canon Grant Hyslop Bursary - Education

Canon Grant Hyslop Bursary: Up to $500

Criteria:

  • Member entering or continuing part-time or full-time studies in the Faculty of Education at UM
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.50
  • Have demonstrated active participation in the College
  • Must register as a College member in the fall
  • Preference will be given to students who hold a degree from UM and who were St John’s College members at the time of graduation.

 

Mary and Patrick Lee Bursary

Mary and Patrick Lee Bursary: Up to $1125

Criteria:

  • For a St John’s College member or graduate who will travel to Uganda to share their expertise in fields such as Education, Theology, Medicine, Architecture or Engineering.

 

Gordon O. Rothney Scholarship in Modern World History

Gordon O. Rothney Scholarship in Modern World History: Up to $575

Criteria:

  • History student who is completing at least second year at UM
  • Registered as a St John’s College member
  • Must have received a grade of B or better in six credit hours of History 
  • Must register in a program of History Studies, including six credit hours in Modern World History.

 

Symons Scholarship in Canadian Studies

Symons Scholarship in Canadian Studies: Up to $350

Criteria:

  • Completed at least 60 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.00
  • Must register in a full-time program (minimum 18 credit hours) with an emphasis on the study of Canada at UM in September of the current year, and as a member of St John’s College
  • Must have a demonstrated record of outstanding contributions and commitment to the community
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Canadian Studies Program (honours, major, minor)

 

Anthony Waterman Fellowship - Economics or Honours Management

Anthony Waterman Fellowship: Up to $ 775

Criteria:

  • Awarded to a research fellow, graduate student, or senior undergraduate student registered as a St John’s College member who is or was in an Economics program (honours or major), or in an Honours Management program, and who will present (or who recently presented) an Economics paper at a conference. Minimum GPA of 3.00 required

Terry and Les Wiens Bursary

Terry and Les Wiens Bursary

Criteria:

  • Must register as a member of the College in the fall
  • Have demonstrated a significant financial need
  • Must be an undergraduate students who has completed 30 credit hours
  • Must be a full-time student registered in a minimum of 18 credit hours
  • Priority will be given to those student who show volunteerism within the community or in the College

Graduate Students

Students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Graduate Studies may also be eligible for awards listed under General, Senior Students, Dentistry, Law, and Medicine, Residence Students or Prizes.

Arthur Uniacke Chipman Graduate Scholarship

Arthur Uniacke Chipman Graduate Scholarship: Up to $3500

Criteria:

  • Beginning a master’s or PhD program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at UM
  • Register as a College member in September
  • Minimum sessional GPA of 3.50 in each of the final two years of the previous program required
  • Preference will be given to those studying in the Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Award includes the use of a Graduate Carrel in the College for the academic year. Recipients will be selected by the St John’s College Scholarship Committee, but notification of recipients and payment will be made by the University’s Faculty of Graduate Studies

 

Colin Inkster Memorial Award

Colin Inkster Memorial Award: Up to $2450

Criteria:

  • Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a member or graduate of St John’s College who shows promise of achieving distinction in graduate work
  • Must be a Canadian citizen
  • Preference will be given to applicants who appear likely to make a contribution in the fields of either Canadian Studies or Religion Candidates may be doing graduate work at UM or at another university

 

The Kathryn & Robert Young Graduate Scholarship - History

The Kathryn & Robert Young Graduate Scholarship: Up to $350
Criteria:

  • Awarded to an undergraduate in final year of study in history. Or graduate student pursuing PhD in history at any Canadian university
  • Open to full and part-time students
  • Candidate must show proof of acceptance/enrolment in a Canadian graduate program
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Preference will be shown for students who have participated in the life of St John’s College.

For students living in St John’s College Residence (except the Kathleen Burrows Lightcap Bursaries, which are open to St John’s College members living in any residence on campus).

Arthur H. Hoole Bursary

Arthur H. Hoole Bursary: Up to $825

Criteria:

  • Entering the second or later year as a resident student of St John’s College
  • Must be a full-time student registered in a program of studies at UM as a St John’s College member
  • Minimum GPA of 3.00
  • Financial need will be considered
  • Involvement in residence community life may be a factor in the selection

 

Murdith McLean Scholarship

Murdith McLean Scholarship: Up to $1000

Criteria:

  • Must be entering second year or later as a resident of St John’s College
  • Awarded to the St John’s College resident student who best combines contributions to residence life with academic achievement
  • Must be registered as a College member and as a full-time student (minimum 18 credit hours) at UM
  • Minimum GPA 3.00 required
  • Residents may apply or be nominated for this Scholarship

St John's College Residence Association Award

St John's College Residence Association Award: Up to $400

Criteria:

  • For St John's College residence students registered in full-time studies at the University of Manitoba
  • With a minimum GPA of 2.00

How do I become eligible?

To be eligible you must be registered as a St John’s College member by the application deadline. Graduates and students who change faculties may need to re-register as members. College membership is open to all students of the UM. 

Students can become a member by following these steps: 

  1. Go to http://www.umanitoba.ca/ and select "Aurora Student".
  2. Select "Enter Secure Area"
  3. Enter your student number and PIN
  4. Select "Login"
  5. Select "Enrolment and Academic Records"
  6. Select "Declarations"
  7. Select "Declare College Membership"
  8. Click the "Add" button to add new membership
