By accessing resources and supports available to you, you’ll be laying the groundwork to help succeed throughout your time at university. UM students Raven and Simran share their stories and provide tips on how to access information and supports.

I am so lucky to be part of a cohort that is diverse, supportive, encouraging and who genuinely wants to see others succeed. This supportive environment has allowed me to ask questions, take risks, learn and grow.

  • First year student supports

Your first year of university is about settling into school, making good choices and developing good habits. The First Year Planning Guide includes all the essential information you need to accept your offer of admission register for courses. Be sure to also check out UM Commons, your online resource hub for getting involved and making the most of your first year.

  • "My advice to students starting university would be to get involved. There are so many great opportunities to meet new people. The people you meet become relationships that you will embrace for the rest of your life and the experiences you have with those friends will teach you even more.”

    – Andrew Vercaigne, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences.

  • Child care

For students who require child care, UM has a licensed daycare centre right on the Fort Garry Campus. The Campus Children’s Centre is a welcoming environment that celebrates a diversity of cultures and weaves traditional teachings into its curriculum. Care is available for children three months to six years old. Be sure to register early, as spots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • "...We are committed to creating a mutually respectful and positive environment where highly-trained and experienced employees, families and the community work together to ensure the best quality care for children..."

    –Campus Children's Centre mission statement

  • Wellness

Health and wellness play a critical role in student success. UM offers a wide range of services that will support your wellbeing throughout your time as a student, from a community clinic to counselling services, spiritual supports and mental health resources.

  • “I struggled with balancing the stress of life, school and health. It’s important that as students we learn it’s okay to not be okay. Reaching out for help and getting involved in my culture were the best decisions I made."

    – Kirsten Fleury, Faculty of Science

  • Accessibility Services

Every student deserves access to a barrier-free education. Student Accessibility Services provides support for students with all kinds of learning and accessibility needs, including hearing, injury-related, learning, mental health, medical, physical, visual or temporary disabilities. Student Accessibility Services can help you access assistive technologies and coordinate classroom accommodations and support staff such as ASL-English interpreters, transcriptionists, notetakers and academic attendants.

  • "Student Accessibility Services has aided me with the necessary accommodations to help me succeed by changing my environment, without which would cause me to be disadvantaged in the institution."

    – Brandon Wozniak, Student and president of the Accessibility Centre
