  • Vertical Staffing Resources (formerly People Ready) provides immediate and short-term employment that provides payment on the same or next working day
  • Gig work software platforms including Task Rabbit, Uber Eats, Tutor Bright, Door Dash and Skip the Dishes provide short, contract tasks such as delivering food or completing tasks for payment.

On Campus Jobs

Many students prefer to work on campus and there are a variety of positions available - from research assistant work to food service and administrative roles. On-campus work and volunteering is also a great way to build connections and community. Here are the main websites that list on-campus job opportunities:

  1. UMConnect is your UM student job posting portal which posts on-campus, off-campus jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities for students. Login using your UM student e-mail address.
  2. UM Human Resources posts jobs a range of positions, including TA, Grader/Marker, and Food Service Worker. Student jobs are typically posted within “Students" or "Unionized Support Staff" categories.
  3. UMSU hires students to work for their office, as well as Degrees Restaurant, VWs Social Club, G.P.A.'s Convenience Store and I.Q’s Cafe & Billiards. Also check their social media feeds for opportunities. (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) or email UMSU to inquire.
  4. Bison Sports, Recreation Services & Mini U hires students to work at sporting events, with Mini U Programs, at the Active Living Centre and other recreation facilities.
  5. Academic Learning Centre hires students for academic support roles, including Writing Tutors, Content and Study Skills Tutors, and Supplemental Instruction Leaders.
  6. Work-Study Program hires students with documented financial need (see the website for eligibility details). Recruitment typically spans from mid-August to early September each year. The goal of the program is for employers with diverse positions on campus to develop some relevant skills in students. 
  7. Research Grant-funded Student Job Opportunities - Positions posted by individual UM faculty members and funded by research grants.

Don't forget to access the "hidden job market" - positions that are not advertised and instead filled through networking. Here are some ideas:

  • Talk to professors! They often hire students they are familiar with for research assistant roles.
  • Private businesses, food services and UM offices on-campus are other potential sources of jobs at the University of Manitoba. Some units and departments prefer to hire through word of mouth. If you're interested in finding out more about these opportunities, visit the employer directly. Pembina Hall, Conference & Catering, and the Campus Day Care are some examples of places that may have part-time employment opportunities.

When you're connecting with employers take along a tailored resumé that you created specifically with that job in mind and offer to leave a copy with them.

Undergraduate Research Awards also provide opportunity for students to gain experience on campus. You may also wish to explore other research opportunities and supports.

Tenants or organizations located within the University of Manitoba Smart Park, located off Chancellor Matheson Road, may be potential employers to consider as well. Examples: Emergent BioSolutions, Richardson Centre for Food Technology & Research.

Career Services offers many job search preparation resources such as workshops and online workbooks. Students are also invited to meet with a Career Consultant for further support.

Industry Associations and Employer Directories

Sector councils and industry associations are excellent resources for industry specific information. These provide everything from labour market reports to job postings to networking opportunities. You might also find a directory of organizations and companies in the field, which is a great starting point for any job search. More than one association or council might apply to you depending on your interests: consider getting a student membership to reap the greatest benefits.

Your specific occupation of interest might also have its own professional association. These organizations can also host job boards and listings of member organizations. These, and additional industry resources, will be listed within the profiles in our UM Exploring Occupations library. You may also wish to do a Google search to discover other relevant associations, societies and councils, including those that align with the region where you wish to work.

Note: that this list is not exhaustive. It includes directories provided by industry associations and other organizations. The resources are listed here to support students as they continue to identify potential employers and increase their industry knowledge.
