The Architecture 2 Gallery (A2G) is a design and planning gallery for the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. The space is a platform to share design and planning projects, works and research from within and outside the Faculty through exhibitions and events, bringing together student input and initiatives with topical research of faculty members and the greater design and planning community. A2G is a collaborative endeavour, serving, first and foremost, the students in the Faculty of Architecture.
The gallery connects the interests of design students and professionals to contemporary questions in Environmental Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design and City Planning. Its position within these fields of study shapes the programming, presenting work in the overlap and in-between, celebrating multi/intra/inter/trans-disciplinary modes of production and reception.
Space
A2G is located in Room 215 of the Architecture 2 building at 56 Curry Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Its dimensions are 24’ wide by 30’ deep and 10’ high. The gallery faces the main corridor, connected by a fully glazed entrance wall and lobby flanked by two dark teak vitrines. The terrazzo floor is continuous throughout the hallway, lobby and gallery space. The wall farthest from the entrance has a 20” deep and 24” high built-in shelf.
History
The Architecture 2 Building was constructed in 1965 by Smith Carter Searle Associates for the University of Manitoba’s School of Art. The gallery space was the location for the School of Art One One One Gallery, which has since moved to the ARTlab at 180 Dafoe Road W.
A2G programming has centered on design & planning since the early 2000s and remains one of the few design-focused galleries in Canada.
