Working in Canada as an International Student

Many international students are interested in working while they study in Canada to gain work experience, make connections with employers, and earn some additional money. To ensure that you are working legally while studying in Canada, there are some important requirements that you need to meet. International students may not start working in Canada until they have started their full-time program of study.

Co-op Work Permit for International Students

For some academic programs, work experience is part of the curriculum. However, international students need a co-op work permit to participate in a co-op, field placement, internship, practicum or clinical placement, whether you are paid or unpaid. A co-op work permit allows students to work full time in their co-op jobs. The co-op work permit is usually issued for the length of your study permit.
