  • If using a relative's genealogy who is currently with the MMF database, you will have to provide their first name, last name, and date of birth.

  • Name change documents may be required if your birth name has changed, (i.e. marriage certificate).

  • Passport quality photo (or this can be done on Mobile Office)

Each applicant will require: 

  • A valid government issued ID (photo preferred) – see attached sheet of acceptable ID that Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) accepts
  • Know their 10-digit status number
  • Full name they are registered under (first, middle, last)
  • If their name is different, they will require an official Change of Name document (original) or their birth certificate (original).

Who should definitely attend this event?


If you're a new Indigenous student, this orientation is designed especially for you! Returning Indigenous students are also encouraged to join and reconnect. Non-Indigenous students, staff and faculty are warmly welcome to attend and learn more about the Indigenous campus community.

What will I get out of attending?

You’ll meet new people, build your support network, learn about academic and cultural resources, enjoy a free lunch, take part in traditional games and photo activities and earn a Indigenous-designed UM t-shirt for completing the Passport Game.

As a new Indigenous student, what’s the best way to navigate the event?

Start at the registration table to pick up your event map and Passport Game card, then explore the core academic, cultural and leadership support booths. 

Enjoy the free lunch at Migizii Agamik, watch the live entertainment and join lawn games or tipi activities. 

Don’t forget to complete your Passport Game card to earn an Indigenous-designed UM t-shirt. Check out the Orange Shirt origami workshop anytime between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Can I connect with Elders at the event?

Absolutely. Elders will be present at Migizii Agamik to offer cultural and spiritual support. Everyone is welcome to stop by, listen and engage in conversation.

I'm a current UM Indigenous student—can I participate in the Indigenous Student Makers Market?

Yes! The Indigenous Student Makers Market is open to all current First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students at UM who wish to showcase or sell their creative, artistic, or cultural work. Participation is free, and you can email gabrielle.desrochers@umanitoba.ca for more information.

Is the event accessible?

Yes! Migizii Agamik and the surrounding area are wheelchair accessible. If you need specific accommodations, please contact the Indigenous Student Centre (isc@umanitoba.ca)  in advance.

Directions

  • Indigenous Orientation 2025 will take place across several connected indoor and outdoor areas on the Fort Garry campus of UM. There will be clear signage and multiple activity stations located at:

    • Migizii Agamik – Bald Eagle Lodge (114 Sidney Smith St)

    • Migizii Agamik Lawn (surrounding green space)
    • Pedway around Migizii Agamik (green-highlighted area on map)

    These central locations are easy to access on foot.
