Your first year at UM

Your first year at UM is something special. Whether you have a clear vision of your academic journey or you’re hoping to explore and settle into student life, we’re here to support you and help you transition into undergraduate studies.

There are many first year resources and opportunities at UM. Watch as third-year architecture student Sari talks about her U1 experience, from new friends to student supports.

University 1

University 1 (U1) is a unique, flexible approach to your first year at UM. It allows you to meet the admission or first year requirements for one or more target degree programs, even if you are not yet sure which degree path is right for you.

In other words, you have the flexibility to explore a variety of subject areas while completing the first year of a three or four year degree—even before you've even been accepted to a specific program of study.

U1 can also be helpful if you're transitioning from high school to university by providing a large support network for first year students in adapting to university life and academic expectations.

U1 will not add any time or cost to your degree. It serves as year 1 of any three or four-year degree.

From the time you accept your offer to your first day of classes, the First Year Planning Guide will be a go-to resource with essential information on how to select and register for your courses and complete other items on the new student checklist.
Next steps for new students

Once you've applied, our next steps series will cover everything you need to know about becoming a UM student. These pre-recorded and live-streamed sessions will walk you through everything you need to know before you begin, from university terminology to financial planning.
