There are many factors involved when making the decision to attend university in a new country. At the University of Manitoba, supports and resources are in place to assist international students with their transition to life in Canada.

International Centre

The International Centre is the first place you'll go for support as an international student at UM. You can get help with things like pre-arrival emails, orientation, health coverage, housing and academic requirements, and get answers to other questions you might have. The International Centre also hosts community events so you can have fun and connect with other students on campus.

International student advisors 

International student advisors are here to help you adjust to life in Canada and support you throughout your studies at the university. They understand what it is like to study away from home and can connect you with academic, personal and cultural support services even before you arrive in Canada to ensure a smooth and welcoming transition.

Study at the English Language Centre

The English Language Centre (ELC) is a terrific resource if your first language is not English. If you need to meet university English language admission requirements, or hope to improve your English writing and presentation skills while you're studying at UM, the ELC is ready to help.

International College of Manitoba

Discover a pathway to UM through the International College of Manitoba

The International College of Manitoba is where you can enroll in programs that prepare you for entry to the University of Manitoba. If you do not meet UM's academic requirements, or you would like additional supports, the International College of Manitoba may be the pathway program for you.

Find a helpful mentor

We know you can feel uncertain when you are studying in a new country. Join our popular Welcome Mentors  program to pair up with a mentor—an experienced UM student—who will help you become familiar with our university and the things that go along with studying here.

Join the Language Exchange

A good conversation partner can make practicing English much less daunting! We invite you to sign up for our Language Exchange program, where you can connect each week with people to practice each other’s languages and learn about other cultures in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Even if you’re already comfortable with English, this is a wonderful opportunity to explore new languages and broaden your cultural understanding. With students representing over 140 countries, our campus is one of the most diverse places to learn from each other and make meaningful connections.

Work in Manitoba while you are a student and after you graduate 

As an international student, you may be eligible to work up to 24 hours per week to build your network, enhance your language abilities, develop professional skills and help cover the costs of your education. 

Career Services supports all UM undergraduate and graduate students throughout their career journey by helping them explore career options, prepare strong resumes and cover letters, practice interview skills, and develop effective job search strategies.

Winnipeg is a great place to live and gain Canadian work experience; you may even decide to stay after graduation! Consider applying for a post-graduate work permit. It allows students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience for up to three years after graduating. 

After graduation and gaining  some work experience, you may also apply to stay and work in Manitoba permanently through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program.

    Live and learn on campus 

    Your time in residence will be one of the most memorable and rewarding parts of your UM experience. Our residence buildings feature furnished rooms, free high-speed internet, study spaces, lounges and laundry facilities.
