How Distance Education Courses Work
Distance education courses are delivered online (asynchronously) using the University of Manitoba Learning Management System (LMS), UM Learn.
There are no scheduled lecture times. Students are expected to learn the course material independently by reading assigned materials and/or viewing pre-recorded lecture videos. A modern computer with reliable internet access is required to take distance education courses, and students must ensure they can meet these requirements before registering. Some courses may also require additional technology, such as an external webcam for online testing.
Student Technology Requirements
Student Expectations and Time Commitment
Distance education courses require a higher level of independent, self-directed study compared to on-campus courses. During the term, on-campus courses typically include 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of lectures per week. Students are generally encouraged to spend 2–3 hours of study time per lecture hour, in addition to completing assigned readings and viewing course materials. As a result, students may spend five or more hours per week studying for a single course.
Distance education courses often require a similar or even greater time commitment. The amount of time needed each week will vary depending on the course content, the student’s background and experience, and the material being covered during a given week.
