Deferral policy

If you have applied to the Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) at the English Language Centre (ELC), but you are unable to attend, you can defer your application until the following term. Any tuition amount you have already paid will be held until the following term. You cannot defer more than one consecutive term.

If you do not attend in the following term, you will have to reapply for the program and you will forfeit 50 per cent of the tuition fee, plus the $500 non-refundable tuition fee (NRF). To receive the remaining refund, you must submit your refund request to elc@umanitoba.ca before the refund deadline. If you do not request a refund by the posted deadline, you will forfeit 100 per cent of the tuition payment.

Withdrawal policy

If you no longer plan to attend the Intensive Academic English Program, you must request an official withdrawal. Withdrawals made after the start of the term require the approval of an ELC program coordinator. To withdraw from the program, or to book an appointment with a program coordinator, email us at elc@umanitoba.ca or come to the ELC office before the voluntary withdrawal deadline

If you stop attending the program but do not officially withdraw, you will receive a failing grade and will not receive a refund.

Refund policy

If you officially withdraw from the IAEP, you may be entitled to receive some or all of your tuition back. You must meet all the requirements outlined by the ELC office in order to be eligible for a refund. To request a refund, email us at elc@umanitoba.ca or visit our office at 520 University Centre. All requests for refunds must be completed by 1:00 p.m. on the deadline date.

  • New and returning students withdrawing before the pre-program withdrawal deadline are eligible for a full refund minus application fees and the $500 non-refundable tuition fee (NRF).
  • New students withdrawing during the first week of classes will forfeit 50 per cent of the tuition fee in addition to the $500 NRF.
  • After the placement test, returning students are no longer eligible for a refund.
  • No tuition refunds will be given after the first week of the program.
  • If you are transferring to another program at UM and inform the ELC office before the program begins, the ELC will refund 100 per cent of tuition fees as well as the $500 NRF.

The ELC does not refund program application fees, homestay application fees or the $500 non-refundable tuition fee.

Visa rejection

If the Canadian Government rejects your application for documents necessary to enter Canada, the ELC will refund all tuition fees and health insurance fees. You must apply for this refund in writing to elc@umanitoba.ca and include a copy of the letter of rejection.

You must notify us of the visa rejection before the start of the program. Otherwise, regular refund policies will apply. If you defer your acceptance because your visa is denied, you must submit a new visa rejection letter along with a written refund request to be eligible for a full tuition refund in the term to which you deferred.
