I have been an active member of the Department of Sociology and Criminology since 1989. After retiring from full-time teaching in 2023, I became a Research Fellow at St John’s College and was appointed Professor Emeritus. I recently received a Fulbright Canada Research Chair Award to support my ongoing research on social inequality, social policy and political sociology from a comparative, cross-national perspective. My research on social inequality focuses on its many guises, including poverty and homelessness, the distribution of income and wealth, access to rights, social inclusion and the distribution of power. My social policy research focuses on the welfare state and its central policy domains, including family policy, labour market policy, health policy and housing policy. Most recently, I have turned my focus to the under-researched ‘third pillar’ of the welfare state – protective legislation. I am currently editing a book on this topic as well as a special issue of the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law. My research is also expanding into the politics of culture, with an emphasis on music, culture and social movements in the US.
My work examines several material dimensions of inequality, including the distribution of income and wealth, poverty and homelessness while also illuminating its human dimensions – inclusion, access to rights and the distribution of power. My work also addresses the varied character and impact of social policy approaches and welfare states across nations. View a description and reviews of my most recent book recent book, Poverty and Austerity amid Prosperity (Olsen 2021, University of Toronto Press).
