Jesuit Centre for Catholic Studies
The Jesuit Centre for Catholic Studies at St. Paul's College is a teaching, research, and service facility funded and operated as a joint initiative between St. Paul’s College and the Jesuits in English Canada. The Centre exists to address issues related to the Catholic and Jesuit identity of St. Paul’s College and its connection to fields such as theology, philosophy, education and the liberal arts. Working in collaboration with others as an ecumenical and interfaith project, the Centre is charged with the facilitation and sponsorship of publications, workshops and research directly related to the worldview of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Events
Each year, the Jesuit Centre for Catholic Studies hosts several public lectures, lunch-hour talks and other scholarly events that examine the historical and contemporary relevance of the Catholic Church, the Society of Jesus and Christianity more generally.

“Pope John VIII and the Byzantine connection: evidence from the church of Santa Maria de Secundicerio in Rome”
Wednesday, September 22, 2021
John Osborne (Ph.D. Courtauld Institute 1979) has broad research interests in medieval Italy, with a special focus on the material culture of the cities of Rome and Venice. His publications have covered topics as varied as the medieval use of the Roman catacombs, the fragmentary mural paintings from excavated churches such as San Clemente and Santa Maria Antiqua, descriptions of Roman monuments by medieval visitors, the decorative program of the church of San Marco in Venice, 17th-century antiquarian drawings of medieval monuments, and the medieval understanding and use of Rome’s heritage of ancient buildings and statuary. He is also interested in the question of cultural transmission between Western Europe and Byzantium. Two research projects are currently in progress: a multi-volume history of early medieval Rome with an emphasis on documentation through material culture (history of art, and archaeology), and the late medieval and early modern visual culture of a religious order, the Apostolic Clerics of St Jerome, known more popularly as the ‘Gesuati’. -

Mr. Bo Gajda
Bo Gajda has enjoyed an enriching and rewarding work history in the not-for-profit rehabilitation services and church ministry sectors. He is a retired prison chaplain with over sixteen years’ experience within Manitoba federal medium and minimum-security institutions. In the community, he continues to work with church and non-profit organizations and groups with social and restorative justice missions. The focus has been on initiatives in support of a successful return to our communities of those completing prison sentences.
Bo has served on the advisory team for Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) Winnipeg for over eighteen years and is a founding member of the national Board of Directors, CoSA Canada Inc. For several years now, Bo has escorted offenders approved for temporary passes to the Thursday Next Step peer group support program, a core program of Future Hope’s reintegration support services. This volunteer engagement flowed from his continuing experience on the Future Hope Board of Directors, which is currently engaged in its own process of transition and growth period.
