Research areas
A key goal of the department of biological sciences is to promote world-class research in areas that are central to biology now and into the future. These areas allow our strong participation in longstanding and well-developed research directions, as well as foster innovations in newly emerging areas of Biology and Life Sciences. Our faculty members have identified in one or more of these groups.

Research in action
Watch Will Bugg, a PhD student in the Department of Biological Sciences and a recipient of UM's 2023 Distinguished Dissertation Award talk about his groundbreaking research. Bugg's studies of prehistoric lake sturgeon could provide crucial clues to how freshwater fish will fare against climate change.
