Professionalism
Professionalism is at the heart of medicine and defines how we relate to our patients, our colleagues and our learners. As physicians, we have responsibility to the communities we serve, the colleagues we work with and the learners we teach.
The University of Manitoba is committed to assuring safe, respectful and supportive learning environment in which all of its members are enabled and encouraged to excel. This is an environment free of discrimination, harassment and mistreatment and one in which feedback on performance can be shared openly without concern for ridicule or reprisal. All members of our diverse community share responsibility for maintaining a positive learning environment and for taking appropriate steps to seek advice and/or address learner mistreatment when it occurs.
Learner initiated concerns
Learners are encouraged to address issues in the learning environment with the individual, with the clerkship director, program director or other faculty. Learners may also contact the associate dean of professionalism regarding issues of intimidation, harassment, and discrimination.
Meeting with associate dean is confidential and allows the learner the opportunity to discuss the issue and learn about steps to address their concerns.
Requests for anonymity will be respected although it may limit the associate dean’s ability to respond to concerns. Situations that raise concern for safety of learners may require action.
Monitoring the learning environment
Our office also offers the following:
- Learning environment assessments
- Rotation evaluations
- Mistreatment reporting
- Ad-hoc reporting
- Referrals
