The University of Manitoba Libraries offers open access journal and text hosting services to assist the UM community to develop open access publications for scholarship and instruction. We support both Open Journal Systems (OJS) and Pressbooks platforms.

How we can help you
The Research Services librarian can assist you to make publishing choices that meet your needs and possibly save you time and money. In individual consultation to:
- Explore considerations for publication workflows and planning
- Electronic hosting for journals and texts
- Technical training and support in Open Journal Systems (OJS)
- Support in sharing published resources using MSpace
- ISSN, ISBN and /or e-ISSN application
- Persistent unique identifier assignment (e.g. DOI, ORCID)
- Set up/improve indexing and discovery in aggregators
- Investigate copyright-related topics for authors

Hosting checklist: Getting started with us
Partnership
As the publishing partner, you are responsible for the following
- Managing the editorial process (including all workflows such as content solicitation, peer review, copyright management, copy editing, reference management, etc.)
- Marketing and promotional activities
- Copyright management of the publication, including that all content is original or licensed under an open license that allows for reuse and adaption
Pre-publishing checklist
Before you submit a proposal to us, your proposed publication must meet the following:
- At the time of request, the editor-in-chief (or equivalent) be a current U of M faculty member, instructor, or student
- Present a vetting plan for content selection to ensure quality, such as peer review or similar
- UML has the non-exclusive rights to reproduce, translate (to any medium or format for the purpose of preservation without changing the content), and distribute worldwide in electronic format in any medium; these rights do not include the right to sell the content or access to the content
- Ensure that authors retain the copyright of their work
Journals
The publication must have:
- A sustainability plan to show the continuation of the serial for the future
- A clear copyright policy that transparently outlines what terms content is controlled and disseminated
- An editorial board or conference committee, as appropriate
- the Memorandum of Understanding for UML-Hosted OJS publications signed and submitted to the UM Office of Legal Affairs
Books
- The publication must be openly licensed using a Creative Commons license or equivalent
