Supplemental instruction

Request to have a librarian visit your class and provide basic or advanced instruction on different topics involved in the research process and about using the Libraries effectively.

Instruction sessions may vary by subject, so it is best to discuss this with your librarian in advance. Sessions may include:

  • An introduction to library resources and services
  • Information on subject specific collections and related technologies
  • Instruction on search strategies, identifying and evaluating scholarly sources and other sources of information
  • Instruction on citation styles and citation management tools
  • Support for research assignments
  • Discussion of information literacy, digital literacy, and academic integrity
  • Information about other student support units such as the Academic Learning Centre and the Writing Tutors program

Guides and resources

  • Learn at the Libraries is an introduction to research and writing at the undergraduate level. The website includes:

    • short modules covering topics related to academic writing
    • searching for scholarly sources
    • evaluating research material
    • citation styles.

    The modules are interdisciplinary in nature in order to supplement diverse approaches to teaching and learning. Use any of the content from Learn at the Libraries in your course by:

    • referring students to the resource
    • sharing the link in your syllabus
    • adding the modules to UM Learn
