Preparing for teacher certification and graduation
As you complete the final year of your B.Ed. program, we want to clarify the next steps towards becoming a professionally certified teacher in Manitoba and to connect you with important process information.
We understand that the process may feel a bit overwhelming at first, but the key is to be proactive and to understand the timeline and requirements beforehand. Our goal is to connect you with the right information and resources so that you feel confident and ready!
Please note that there are two separate processes:
Graduation
The University of Manitoba is responsible for issuing your Bachelor of Education degree and transcript confirming conferral of your B.Ed. degree.
Certification
Provincial teacher certification is handled separately by the Professional Certification Unit (PCU) under the Province of Manitoba’s Department of Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning. Teaching certificates are issued after UM convocation, once the PCU receives and verifies that applicants meet the requirements.
It is the responsibility of each graduating Teacher Candidate to:
• Understand the requirements for graduation and certification
• Keep careful records, including: Certificates of completion for Respect in Schools and/or Commit to Kids, and Treaty Training and copies of your Summative Evaluations
• Follow through with both the graduation requirements and the Teacher Certification application process; and ensure that all documents are submitted correctly, on time, and to the correct location.
Other Important information and links:
• Monitor your UM Email address throughout the year for any communications regarding graduation. Carefully note any deadlines and action items.
