Biography
Kerniel grew up all over the world, gaining an education in public schools in Fiji, Samoa, Kenya and Canada while also traveling throughout the many countries of the South Pacific, as well as India, Nepal, Egypt and much of Western Europe. Despite this cosmopolitan upbringing, he decided to call Winnipeg home. For over 30 years he has been active in teaching, building community, local politics and advocating on social justice issues. Kerniel is a founding member of Bluestem Housing Co-op and continues to be active in promoting co-ops, housing co-ops and an advocate for affordable and social housing. He coordinates the Inner-City Work Study program through the Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies at the University of Winnipeg. He also is part of a worker co-op that offers facilitation, planning and community-based research.
