Program information

1. Get your dietetic practicum experience

From September to July, students are registered with the College of Dietitians of Manitoba as Student Dietitians and work full time to gain the minimum 1250 hours of practicum placement during the week. Students complete practicum placements in the 3 practice areas of dietetics:

  • Nutrition Care
  • Food Provision
  • Population Health Promotion

Our program offers a diverse range of placements across various healthcare and community settings. Students may gain experience in long-term care facilities, such as Riverview Health Centre and personal care homes, as well as primary care clinics like Klinic, ACCESS Centres, NorWest Co-op, and the Chronic Disease Education Program. Acute care placements are available at locations including Health Sciences Centre, Thompson General Hospital, and Boundary Trails Health Centre. Additionally, students can participate in food provision placements with organizations such as CANU Canada, Winnipeg School Division, and the Regional Distribution Facility, or explore population health through placements with the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba and Indigenous Services Canada. These opportunities provide comprehensive, hands-on experience in different areas of dietetic practice.

What does within 3 years of graduation mean?

All MAHN applicants must be eligible to register as a Student Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of Manitoba (CDM). CDM regulations state that registrants (Student Dietitians) must have graduated (or upgraded) within 3 years of their program start date.
Examples:

  • To be eligible, you must have convocated from an accredited undergraduate program no more than 3 years as of June 30 of the year you will commence the MAHN program. For example, if you are applying for September 2024 commencement, your date of convocation from an accredited undergraduate program must be within the last 3 years as of June 30, 2024. Those who complete academic upgrading as required by CDM will be notified of their currency timelines upon assessment by the CDM.

What if my graduation date from a dietetics accredited Canadian undergraduate program is more than 3 years prior to the MAHN start date I want to apply?

Contact the College of Dietitians of Manitoba to have your transcript assessed to identify course upgrading requirements to apply for MAHN.

What if I apply and am not accepted?

Applicants may apply as many times as they want so long as they meet College of Dietitians of Manitoba (CDM) currency regulations.

What if I don't have a Canadian dietetic accredited undergraduate degree?

Please contact Student Services at aginfo@umanitoba.ca and describe your academic background to determine next steps.

Does the MAHN program accept transfer credits?

Transfer credits are not accepted.

Do I require a supervisor to apply?

The MAHN program is not a thesis-based graduate program, therefore, applicants do not require advisors or supervisors to apply to the MAHN program.

When can I submit my application for the MAHN program?

The MAHN application portal opens annually on October 1.

Can MAHN students work while in the program?
