The Master of Applied Human Nutrition (MAHN) is a one-year, full-time intensive program for students who have completed an accredited Canadian undergraduate dietetics degree. Students complete dietetics coursework along with competency-based practicum placements necessary to qualify as an entry-level Registered Dietitian.
The Masters of Applied Human Nutrition takes place over one year.
You will gain practice-based experience in three areas of dietetics: Nutrition Care, Food Provision and Population Health Promotion.
Up to 24 students may be accepted in Fall 2025
The MAHN program is accredited by EQual (Accreditation Canada). This accreditation status serves as an important demonstration of our commitment to providing quality education in alignment with accreditation and regulatory requirements. These requirements ensure that health education programs maintain high standards and that graduates are prepared to deliver safe and effective care at entry-level practice. Additionally, graduates of the MAHN program will be eligible to write the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination. If you require additional information regarding our accreditation status, we encourage you to reach out to FHNS.Accreditation@umanitoba.ca.
Questions about the MAHN program should be directed to mahn.info@umanitoba.ca.
From September to July, students are registered with the College of Dietitians of Manitoba as Student Dietitians and work full time to gain the minimum 1250 hours of practicum placement during the week. Students complete practicum placements in the 3 practice areas of dietetics:
Our program offers a diverse range of placements across various healthcare and community settings. Students may gain experience in long-term care facilities, such as Riverview Health Centre and personal care homes, as well as primary care clinics like Klinic, ACCESS Centres, NorWest Co-op, and the Chronic Disease Education Program. Acute care placements are available at locations including Health Sciences Centre, Thompson General Hospital, and Boundary Trails Health Centre. Additionally, students can participate in food provision placements with organizations such as CANU Canada, Winnipeg School Division, and the Regional Distribution Facility, or explore population health through placements with the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba and Indigenous Services Canada. These opportunities provide comprehensive, hands-on experience in different areas of dietetic practice.
The MAHN program consists of seven courses taking place over three semesters. HNSC 7700, 7710 and 7720 are practicum-based courses that consist of individual practicum placements and group experiential learning workshops. In HNSC 7730, 7740 and 7750, students will build on their knowledge in applied human nutrition with an emphasis on Indigenous foodways and health, advocacy and leadership and sustainable food systems. In HNSC 7760 students will engage in practice-based dietetic research.
